I remember when the movie of this book came out on tv a long time ago. It was a sensation because it actually showed heart transplant surgery live on television which at that time was a first.
It also starred the young Helen Hunt, and the guy who played "Crocker" on Kojak alongside Telly Savalas. And the mother was played by the actress who would star in Close Encounters.
The source material, Transplant, is nothing less than astounding. It should be required reading at any school teaching medicine, psychiatry and psychology. Dossick, the writer director interviewer, shows an absolute genius for capturing lightning in a bottle.
I do family therapy for a living. You will never find a more frank, honest, uncensored account of how a family copes, or fails to cope, when the sole breadwinner of the house has a heart attack, and everyone else is left hanging, not knowing what to do next.
It remains a classic of its kind. A terrific read.
