I had the key cut at the dealership. They can make a copy based off the VIN (bring your registration) for $10, and it should be a perfect cut. If you want to save a few extra dollars can have it cut at any cutter or locksmith, but it would be a trace cut and less likely to work (I know from having a key cut like that and it didn't fit correctly).

The programming procedure is readily available online. My local dealership told me that it wouldn't work and there is no such procedure, but I just said "thanks" and that I would try anyways. While I did feel a little silly (you have to open/close the door a bunch of times to program), the process took about 2 minutes and I drove home using the new key.

This is simple. The key is much cheaper than going to the dealer ship. This is the second time I bought a key from this seller. The first time it cost me $10 for the key and I had a locksmith cut and program it for $25. The second time I paid another $10 for the key and just went and go the key cut since a different locksmith told me he couldn't program it and that I would have to go to the dealership. I called his bluff and went online and searched till I found a video of a guy making a key for his car. Did exactly what he said and it worked after 3 tries. You just have to have a little patience and you should be prepared to look silly opening and closing your door 6 times. Instruction are below.

1. Take the new key and one master key that can start your 4runner(old key) into the 4runner with you and close the driver's door.(immobilizer light should be blinking)

2. Insert old key, remove old key, Insert old key, remove old key,
Insert old key, remove old key, Insert old key, remove old key,
Insert old key (immobilizer light should be off from the first insertion)

3. open and close driver's door six times (immobilizer light should be off)
Step 2 and 3 need to be done in less than 35 seconds(pdf says 35 seconds)

4.remove the old key. (immobilizer light should come on(steady on, not blinking))

5. insert the new key(immobilizer light should be blinking)

Then just sit there and wait, after about a minute or two, the blinking immobilizer light should go off and you're done. You will have to repeat for new transponder keys as well if you are doing more than one.

I would suggest changing or clarifying the paperwork included with this key. My key that I bought from S&I Remotes 'was' self programmable because my original key had the dot on it and fell between the years specified for the Toyota Sienna. Most if not all of the feedback for this key states the same. I got my key duplicated (cut) at an Ace Hardware store for $2.00. They cut the key in about 1 minute. I was amazed. I programmed the key in the parking lot with the instructions I found on another web site that auctions things off. It worked the first time after programming. A lock smith wanted $100. And some lock smiths wouldn't do it at all. I was a little nervous because the key I received did not have a dot on it.

My skepticism proved to be unwarranted, as the key filled our need for a second key for our 2008 4Runner. We had a locksmith cut, and program the key for us for $70 total. No area hardware store would cut a chipped key.

There are self-program procedures available on the net, but we chose not to take any chances. Still in all - the Toyota dealer wanted $150 out the door for a programmed key, and we payed about half that for our key.

This key was not the cheapest one but the deal included the cheapest shipping ($1.99.) The delivery was timely and the key worked fine once I figured out how to program it myself. You may have to call several locksmith cause a few said they had to program it for me. Not true.

I bought a used 2008 4Runner and it came with only 1 key. I purchased this key as a spare to keep at home. After I got it cut at a local locksmith I found the procedure online to program it myself which was extremely easy. The spare works perfectly and for a fraction of the cost for a replacement from the dealer.
Highly recommend!

So sad; I spent $8+ for the blank key and $5+ to cut it. But then I couldn't program it!!! I wonder if my key has no transponder chip in it... am sending back.

Update: the vendor sent me a replacement key. although the dealer and Home Depot locksmith said it couldn't be done without a computer (!), I found another locksmith to cut the key before I followed the same programming instructions as I had found online before and it worked the first time!!!!!!! YAAAAY! SAVED a couple hundred bucks by not "buying in" to the dealer story lines!
