Amazon.com Review

Transworld Surf was developed by Angel Studios, a game shop known for creating visually stunning outdoor environments. Therefore, it's no surprise that this extreme surfing game excels graphically. All 10 of the game's locations have a distinct look that properly reflects the conditions in each area. Also lifelike are the player models and animations. The sound effects aren't nearly as remarkable as the graphics, but the music is great. The diverse soundtrack features tracks from Nebula, Dr. Onionskin, Cali Agents, Anti-Flag, and Sum 41.

Game modes include free surf, single session, multiplayer, and pro tour. The first three modes are self-explanatory, while the last consists of objective-based levels and competitions with the pros. Although the controls are responsive, timing tricks and combos is initially difficult. Unlike in skateboarding and BMX games, the player has to master each trick's timing while worrying about a constantly moving environment. While it may be too daunting for beginners, this is a deep and rewarding game that's a joy to behold. This is to surfing games what Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is to skateboarding games. --Raymond M. Padilla

(This review refers to the Xbox version of this game.)

Pros:

  • Amazing graphics
  • Responsive controls
  • Good variety of surfers, beaches, and music tracks
Cons:
  • Relatively steep learning curve
  • Hackneyed level objectives
  • Middling sound effects

5.0 out of 5 stars TWS: A game worth waiting for, May 4, 2002
This review is from: Transworld Surf (Video Game)
I preordered TW Surf before it was out, and its being late slightly disappointed me.
But now it's out on the PS2, and it's totally cool!!!
Surfing:
Riding the tubs, pulling off a snap under the curl, and floaters are awesome.
But as all surfers know "aerial tricks" and "Kick flips" rarely come into surfing, except as a possible finishing move. In this game a majority of the big tricks are focused on aerial maneuvers. Surfers don't let this deter you, this game kicks [rear]! (Can even run into sponges) If anything, I love it for it free ride mode where you can sit and surf without getting wet in 54 degree water. Being fairly busy, not having someone to hang with, and living 45min from the California North Coast I find it a good reminder of why I love surfing, and a reminder that I need to go more. I've been waiting for such a game, and I am pleased. I'd even go as far to say that I think it beats "Tony Hawk 3". The video clipping are also pretty cool.
Multi-player "Kind of the Wave"
I haven't figured this one out to much... Just a whole bunch of surfing sharing on constant wave...
Should have done a surfer tag game, possibly a hit the sponge game.
Multi-player "Shark Tag":
Pro: it's a cool idea that adds extra fun when playing two players.
Con: the Shark can be a bit frustrating as you learning to attack surfers, and you sometimes end up swimming around for a bit. The shark is the same in every location. Being from California to bad there was not an 18ft great white.
I love how realistic it is... The graphics on the PS2 stick look awesome...
The free rides out to the "line up" are a nice touch...
Hope I didn't forget anything...
But, last of all, you are surfing...
And as all surfers know there's nothing better than that...
Have fun, but don't forget about your surfboard it may get lonely.

P.S. Those who don't surf don't get any false perceptions by the game, just standing up can be hard enough let alone do anything else. But hopefully this will inspire you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tired of Tony Hawk?, July 27, 2002
By
"vaseone" (Highland Beach, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Transworld Surf (Video Game)
I anxiously awaited this game and was not disappointed! Other surf games severely lacked realism. O.K., so most surfers can't pull 720 combos and surf out of them in real life. Yet, I found the basic mechanics very accurate. If you want to accelerate, you have to pump. If you want to pull of a perfect snap turn w/out loosing speed, you have to find some vert. Like T. Hawk's Pro Skater, you can grab, kickflip, and even "grind" a floater. The special tricks are a little easier. Of course, one must still concentrate on staying on the wave. Yes, the learning curve is a little slow, but try real surfing and you will find the same.

The more time you spend on the game, the more fun it gets. Once you have unlocked some new surfboards by winning competitions, you will surf better! The final levels are insane w/ the use of the best board! I even enjoy watching the replays after I have a really sick wave.

Warning- while the "reef girl" is very convenient for bringing you to the wave of choice (there is no need to paddle if you don't feel like it), the screen is hard to watch in this mode. It slows down and looks almost pixelized. Motion also slows down sometimes when there is too much action on-screen. ANNOYING!

The first level, Kirra Point, is boring, but you need to learn somewhere. The game picks up at the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge. By the time you make it to Oahu's Pipeline, you are ripping! THIS GAME IS EXTREMELY ADDICTIVE! Levels are easy to restart and choosing a wave can be fast.

Level goals are not all easy! I found it hard to air over the banner at Huntington Beach. And wait till you have to kickflip over floating cowheads! Most of the goals are fairly easy.

Winning competitions is mostly a matter of staying on your board. Beginning a wave with trick combos and finishing with a long, deep barrel is the most effective if you can link everything together. I found that about one minute per wave seems to work out pretty nicely...

All in all a great purchase! Like Tony Hawk, when you win the game with one charachter, you move on to another- unlocking secret codes along the way. Just don't expect to be ripping withing the first few minutes of play- that just wouldn't be realistic, would it!

TRY THIS GAME AND GET SOME STOKE!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Breakpoint, May 18, 2002

This review is from: Transworld Surf (Video Game)
Sincerely, I was waiting for a surfing game that delivered this much realism and energy. If you have some hope that this game will be as good as THPS, then you may and may not get your wish. First of all, it's surfing, not skating, so you better get used to the fact that there is a wave, and that it is moving, and you cannot just get up and keep surfing. If you just take this game for what it is, it is awesome!!The beaches are beautiful, the surfers are cool, and the soundtrack is rocking. I would say, unless Kelly Slater's game proves to be better than this one, TWS is the THPS of surfing...good mode!!!
