Book Description

November 22, 2010
Raven and Pegasus each have their own reasons for denying their feelings for one another, but once they are all they have left in the entire world, how long can this charade really hold out? Sometimes, if you wish hard enough, dreams can come true, even if you should wake to find them gone like shadows in the morning. Set in Melbourne in the late 90s, Trapdoor is a psychological journey through darkness and light-a story of love, obsession, and beautiful self-destruction.

More About the Author

Vixen Phillips was born in Ballarat, Australia, in 1975. Mostly, she writes, programs computers, and plays guitar and keyboards, but in former lives she's also worked as an audio engineer, in & around various media production studios, as a graphic designer, and in computer sales.

Vixen's stories have been described as dark, poetic, beautiful & depressing. The focus rests on the baring of a character's essence and personal mythos, usually from a very claustrophobic, intimate viewpoint. Above everything else, her writing is all about entering a character's mind and unravelling their madnesses, their dreams, and their passions.

Trapdoor is her first novel, but she has also released a novella, Narcissism, and is working on a new dark steampunk work of fiction, The Amorpheum Key, due in late 2011/early 2012.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very dark and intense story, September 13, 2011
This review is from: Trapdoor (Paperback)
Trapdoor is the story of the complicated and intense relationship between Raven and Pegasus; two lost souls that learn to have faith and trust in one another, when the rest of the world has let them down. Set in the 90's, this dark story is unique and doesn't follow the typical and predictable plot line that most books do these days. It's very intriguing and keeps you wanting more, making you care about the main characters and see a bit of yourself in each! I also love the fact that Trapdoor tells the story from both character's perspectives, giving you the opportunity to see things from both angles. I also feel the writing quality is at a much higher level than that of most modern books and actually, very impressive because the writer really captures the intensity of the story.

All and all, a terrific and unique read! We need more books like this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unrelentingly dark and brooding but engrossing..., December 3, 2011

This review is from: Trapdoor (Paperback)
Trapdoor is unrelentingly dark and brooding but a deeply engrossing read. The characters are incredibly dysfunctional but incredibly believable as well. The story sucks you in and keeps you reading. I haven't gotten this caught up in a book in a very long time. I wanted to hug both of the main characters and tell them everything was going to be alright. (And I wanted to slap them and tell them to seek professional counseling.) And I'll admit it, at the end of the novel I cried like a baby.

Trapdoor is not for the feint of heart. It contains a lot of violence, much of self inflicted. It contains stark and realistic portrayals of characters wounded by childhood abuse (physical and sexual). If you are looking for an escapist fantasy, this is not it. If you are looking for an emotionally charged and highly evocative story, I would highly recommend giving Trapdoor a try. After only a few pages you won't be able to put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, November 17, 2011
This review is from: Trapdoor (Kindle Edition)
I originally didn't buy this from amazon, but stumbled upon Trapdoor when I was browsing websites long before Vix Phillips published under her real name. I found it when searching out poetry and read the first chapters on her website.

I instantly fell for Raven and Pegasus...I wanted to adopt them...and when I could read no more on the web page, I bought the book from Vix when it was a second or third edition of the book (black cover)...and it was worth not only the money I spent on it, but the wait to receive it.

I loved how Vix is able to move the story along through two sets of first person point of view and not make the story seem redundant or stale. Seeing things from each character's eyes was wonderful.

The ending did in fact shock me, and I will not reveal it, but I strongly suggest you have tissues ready. It was brilliantly written.

I have been a fan of Vix ever since reading Trapdoor, and I am proud to recommend this book to everyone who has a dreaming heart!
