Julie Brown would laugh her head off if she knew her CD is selling for ...! Take that, Bette Midler! I haven't heard the CD, I have the vinyl and have been looking for the CD for as long as I've had a CD player ;). This recording is about rocking and laughing so hard you...cry. The best I can do is give you a few tidbits:From "I Like 'Em Big and Stupid": From "Trapped in the Body of a White Girl": From "The Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun": Well, anyway, it helps make aerobic workouts go faster ;). I'll wait til I can afford it, but I've been waiting an awful long time. Perhaps if I had given it 5 stars I'd pay the going rate, but a few of the tracks are a little mundane, the three I quoted from are definitely the pick of the crop. These are the ones you might have heard on funky radio programs. In some strange way this album reminds me of Robin Williams' "Good Morning, Vietnam!"

A surprisingly enjoyable anomaly,

I was quite fortunate to find a copy of this CD at a used CD store (for a tremendous bargain, I may add) and thought, why not. I expected a Weird Al Yankovich style album of pop parody and general silliness. There is a good deal of the silly, yes, but also some surprisingly effective vintage pop tracks.About half the album consists of semi-novelty songs that, while often hilarious, speak little of Brown's singing ability. They include the dated-yet-amusing "Trapped In The Body Of A White Girl" and the ode to the male physique "I Like 'Em Big And Stupid." Two of the funniest tracks are the duo of "Girl Fight Tonight" and "The Homecoming Queen's Got A Gun", which could both be viewed as parodies of 60's girl pop, such as "Judy's Turn To Cry" and "Leader Of The Pack" respectively. The other half of the album consists of a handful of pop tracks which must have seemed very of-the-moment back in the mid-80's. Predictably, the songs are mainly about love and getting that one special guy to make his move. Brown has a decent voice for the material, especially considering the popular artists at the time, but she really shines on "Time Slips Away," which suprised me by its craftsmanship and emotion. Brown herself has a recognized status as a kind of cultural anomaly: an actress/writer/singer who became kind-of famous for a few years, a pop culture reference that still does film and TV work. For a mid-80s pop album, "Trapped" is surprisingly well-done and enjoyable. Perfect summer driving music, and worth it for "Homecoming Queen" alone. 4 out of 5.

This album really surprised me. Originally bought it for 'The Homecoming Queen's Got A Gun' expecting the rest of the album to be mostly comedy. But actually, most of the songs really rock and are very danceable. The production quality is above average and Julie Brown has an amazingly good voice!

I had the tape in the 80s. I wore it out. My friends and I laughed and laughed till we wet our pants!
The Breakfast Club, Prince, Rick Springfield, Shoulder Pads, Leg Warmers, and Julie Brown are the 80s incarnate!

This album came off as I kind of expected it to. I always liked Julie Brown in her comedies, and on her own tv show for a bit, and this reflects her kind of humor. Alot of it is fairly funny, like the title track, "Girl Fight Tonight", and "I Like 'em Big And Stupid". All rather silly. But there's also a few tracks that make a legitimate try at pop music. They sound VERY 80's now, and do recall early Madonna, but the songs are decent and lightweight fun. My only big complaint is the absence of "'Cause I'm A Blonde", from the "Earth Girls Are Easy" movie. That's THE Julie Brown song as far as I'm concerned. Still, this is a good find.

Still Love This Album,

I like this album a lot. Though Julie is known for her comedic talents and the singles from this album were comedy songs, I have found over the years that my favorites have become the non-comedic ones. My favorites are Callin' Your Heart, Time Slips Away and Shut Up & Kiss Me. I still listen to them regularly.

Anyone who loves MTV's 'Hottest Little Redhead' will love her crazy, zany album 'Trapped in the Body of a White Girl'. Personally I wouldn't mind a certain part of my anatomy to be stuck in her for awhile. If you are familiar with Julie's brand of humor, you'll not be surprised what this album offers. Although 'Homecoming Queen's got a Gun' was the single with the video to boot, the whole album kicks. I really liked 'Boys 'r a Drug' and 'I Like 'em Big and Stupid'.I'm glad I finally got this cd to replace my long wore out vinyl copy.

If you're excited about music, don't bother. If you're in need of a comedy injection, continue....
Julie Brown cracks me up. This LP is well worth the cash. You'll dance, and you'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll burp. HELP ME!!! I'm trapped, in the body of a lesbian.... Love to all! |
