5.0 out of 5 stars A warm account of teachers who care about troubled youth., February 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Trashcan Kids (Paperback)
A moving account of the teachers and administrators who love and work with hard-to-reach high school students. This book is much more that a description of how dedicated staff members crafted an alternative education program to meet he needs of high school drop outs. It personalizes the mix of heartbreak and celebration that accompanies the task of working with at-risk kids. I was moved to anger and tears and finally to hope. A must read for all secondary teachers and those who believe that the public schools can and must meet the needs of all children.

5.0 out of 5 stars When Education Has a Heart, February 3, 2010
This review is from: Trashcan Kids (Paperback)
Trashcan Kids is a story that moves beyond the scope of typical education and deep into the heart. An incredibly valuable book that reminds us that above all else educators must possess a high level of consideration for those they have the privilege of teaching, regardless of the students' levels of achievement. It had a profound effect on me not just as an educator, but as a human being. The story within the pages proves that we must strive to recognize the gems among us and dismiss the dangerously antiquated thinking that one system can meet the needs of all. When the heart is paired with a strong desire to reach out to a population of youth who simply need an alternative to mainstream education then success in many forms is certainly attainable. This book will renew your faith in education and prove that there are people of substance willing to engage these students and make a powerful impact in their lives. A read you WILL NOT regret.
