I swear I've read about characters like these a gazillion times in her previous novels and I'm pretty sure I've read entire passages from this book in her previous books as well.
She's written some really good romances, but not this one.

Strong Romance,

I was familiar with Radclyffe by name, but had never read any of her work before now. I was under the impression that she wrote historical fiction, but "Trauma Alert" is without doubt a contemporary romantic drama. And it is very well done - I can see why Radclyffe is so popular and prolific. The author quickly built a realistic setting; she obviously did her research and I felt like I was observing real medical professionals. The main characters are believable, and fully developed. I felt real suspense when they were involved in emergency rescues, or surgeries, and kept me turning the virtual pages to see what would happen next.
I also appreciated that the characters didn't immediately fall into lust-filled gazes, and heightened sexual urges the moment their eyes met. The two women assessed each other, and continued with their professional responsibility like real people do. Not every romance has to start with earth shattering sexual attraction. The two women are polar opposites with their own baggage, and masks protecting who they really are inside. That is not to say that the story has no steam - this is a healthy book, not a novella parading as a novel, so readers have time to see a relationship build. One of the best things about the writing is the way characters are matter-of-fact about their sexuality. A gay couple is treated as almost ordinary in the story, which is a refreshing break from the angst gay romances usually have. I am not sure if this is typical of F/F, or this author in particular but it was nice. Recommended.

A Good Read,

I have read a number of Radclyffe's books and found this one to be enjoyable. I do not think that this is one of her best works, but it is a good read. I thought that I could relate to the story, since I am a Firefighter/medic, but I had a hard time believing the fire scenes. You would never enter a known drug house without police present, or go into a fire alone. Yes, I know, it is fiction. I did like both Ali and Beau's characters and thought that their relationship developed realisticly. I also enjoy the fact that Radclyffe does bring past characters back and that you get a follow up on them. If you like Radclyffe, this is worth reading.

Characters too stereotypical,
This review is from: Trauma Alert (Paperback)
Radclyffe has loads of talents, but this one seemed to be pumped out according to formula. Unfortunately, the characters and plot were too predicatable... in fact we've seen these characters in most of her books, just change the names. The word "skated" was creative and unique the first couple of times, then simply tired and overused by the 8th time. Radclyffe, you can do better.

Really Enjoyed - Simple Falling in Love Story,
By FTLOH (East Coast, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Trauma Alert (Paperback)
There were so many things I liked about Radclyffe's "Trauma Alert" - the denial of feelings, the simmering sexual undertone and the great use of supporting characters to name a few. I started reading this at work, and tried so many times to put it down, but the friendship and love between Beau and Ali was too much....I had to finish it. A simple love story that you can enjoy without overthinking.

Once again, Radclyffe doesn't let you down. In Trauma Alert you will get what you expect... an intriguing romance. The characters are appealing and as always, hot and sexy. Radclyffe's ability to tell the same story with a different spin is proof of her amazing finesse as a fiction writer. The cameo appearance of past characters is always a treat and a reminder of other great Radclyffe books. If you like a good romance, you will love Trauma Alert.

Not Her Best, But Not Her Worst,

This review is from: Trauma Alert (Paperback)
Trauma Alert was a good book but not a great one. Having read almost all of Radclyffe's medical romances, it feels like I am rereading the same story with carbon cut outs of the same characters from her other books. The plot was good and engrossing and Radclyffe can spin a wonderful story. Guess I got spoiled by the author's early books and her new books aren't as good. Heart-breaking as it is, I am done reading Radclyffe's books for awhile. I want to remember her for the good books and not ones like Trauma Alert. If you want to read great medical romances, read her early books.

Trauma Alert is the first in a new series from Radclyffe that will feature First Responders, professionals who react to a crisis on the ground level. These books are meant to be romances. Anyone who expects to learn much about how these people are trained or carry out their jobs will need to look somewhere else.
With a clearly stated purpose, the characters become the focus of the book. Secondary characters are used to provide background material or to illustrate personality traits of Ali and Beau, but there is no mistaking that this book is mainly about the interactions between them. Though they may appear complicated to other people, the reader will quickly figure out that they aren't really. They are simply two women who have been hurt and haven't figured a way to get over that yet. Radclyffe has a winning formula. She basically writes the same two characters, giving them different names and putting them in different situations in each book, but following the same progression to the same result. It's difficult to argue with success and her many fans prove that they like what she writes. The plot isn't complicated, but the story is well told and there are a number of sex scenes thrown in to spice up the activity. This is a good one for an afternoon or evening of escapism.

A winner,
By TerryB "Lesfic fan" (Truro, UK) - See all my reviews

Dr Ali Torveau, trauma surgeon, deals with death and tragedy almost every day in the trauma unit. She is also nursing a personal tragedy, so the last thing she wants or needs is to fall in love.
Beau Cross, firefighter turns up in Ali's unit one day. She is also nursing a personal tragedy and doesn't want or need to fall in love. But sometimes it doesn't matter how hard you try not to, or fight it, the inevitable is going to happen. This is definitely a brilliant start to a new first responders series. There are some much loved characters from previous books too. But the book is complete in it's self. Roll on the next one.

Radclyffe at her best once again! Wonderful love atory. Has some very exciting moments also. The scene with the gunman will keep you riveted. She also brought back Wynter and Pearce from the "Turn back time" book. And that was a wonderful surprise because she gives the reader a look at how their life together has evolved, loved it. The love that develops between Beau and Ali is very touching. You'll cheer for them in the end. Another great book!! |
