Book Description

March 3, 2001

Trauma junkies are people who feed on danger and stress. They do their best work under pressure. Janice Hudson was an adrenaline-charged emergency room nurse in a San Francisco-area hospital when a friend told her about CALSTAR, a fledgling helicopter ambulance service with an opening for a flight nurse. Weeks later she was swooping over the Bay Area to scenes of shootings, accidents and disasters. The trauma junkie had found her element.

Hudson spent ten years as a flight nurse, answering calls that were by turns horrifying, heroic and absurd. She decries her personal flights from hell that involved children and drunk drivers. In this moving story, she recalls her triumphs, like the time she performed a surgical cricothyrotomy on a patient as he hung upside down in his overturned car -- in the dark. And she shakes her head at some of the bizarre calls, like the one that took her to the scene of a suspicious mountain lion attack (there are no mountain lions in the Bay Area). But no matter what the call, CALSTAR and its dedicated crew braved danger and hardship to reach the scene of catastrophe in a race against time to bring help to those whose only hope of survival lay in the speed of the helicopter and the skill of the medical crew.

A born storyteller, Janice Hudson writes with compassion, insight and wry humor. Trauma Junkie is an in-the-trenches account of emergency nursing at its most demanding.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Is there an afterlife? Janice Hudson, who's seen her share of death, ventures an assuring yes in this memoir about her years as a trauma nurse.

In May 1987, newlywed intensive-care nurse Hudson was recruited to join a helicopter ambulance service and "fly out to accidents, scrape up the patients and try to get them to qualified care in that first 'golden hour,' when they'd have the best chance for meaningful survival after traumatic injuries." The possibilities for traumatic injury are, of course, legion. Hudson hits on the usual suspects: barroom brawls, failed suicide attempts, and grisly car wrecks. She also recounts what are likely to be some of the more unusual cases in the annals of emergency medicine, including a call from a woman who insisted that her mountaintop home was being overrun by an army of mountain lions (which turned out to be a single housecat, amplified thanks to the caller's diet of alcohol and crystal meth). Death is a constant in her pages (and death itself isn't so bad, she observes: "It's the circumstances that are tragic"). But so is Hudson's belief that something interesting awaits us afterward, as a few of her eerie anecdotes attest.

Doctors' and medical researchers' memoirs are many; those of nurses are comparatively few. Well written and thoughtful, Hudson's is a welcome addition to that small literature--though it's definitely not for the squeamish. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly

Devotees of medical adventures will enjoy this exciting and well-written account of the 10 years the author spent as a flight nurse for CALSTAR (California Shock/Trauma Air Rescue), a helicopter ambulance service based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Drawing on a journal she kept to help herself cope with the stress of dealing with so many critically wounded victims, Hudson describes the dramatic rescues she participated in daily. She worked 24-hour shifts with a second nurse and a pilot; crew members worked, ate and slept together and developed strong bonds based on the quick decisions they had to make to save lives and the heartbreak they sometimes shared. Many of the calls were to the sites of automobile accidents where severely injured people had to be stabilized and airlifted to the nearest trauma center. Hudson relates the story of "amazing Jim," who survived against the odds after she and her colleague worked with firefighters for hours to remove him from the wreckage of a tanker trailer. In other cases, death was unavoidable. Hudson and her crew were called to remove a five-year-old girl from a car crash caused by a parent who was driving drunk. After their patient died, the two nurses also struggled unsuccessfully to save the life of the girl's infant brother, who had been thrown from the wreckage. Despite such sad moments, Hudson, who now works as a nurse anesthetist, has fond memories of her former life on the edge, and she shares them vividly with readers. Color photos.

More About the Author

"Trauma Junkie" is the ultimate story of an unknown amateur writer stumbling into the overwhelming world of publishing. Over the 10 years I worked for CALSTAR (California Shock Trauma Air Rescue), I kept a journal. It was private, allowing me a place to work my feelings after horrendous calls. then something unexpected happened- I began to enjoy writing. Over the years the stories piled up. When I left to go to a graduate program for anesthesia, my little journal sat in a box, almost forgotten.
That TJ was published at all was a miracle. My query letter came over Firefly's 'transom', and hit the right desk at the right time. Since the original publish date, my little journal has certainly been a fun ride. I am not a professional writer, (although I come from a family of writers), and the fact TJ is still alive is wonderful.
About me: born in Columbus, Ohio, and moved to Palo Alto, California in 1971. My undergraduate degree, a BSN with a dual degree in Psychology was at the University of San Francisco. I returned to graduate school in 1994, and after two intense years, graduated with honors with an MSN, specializing in anesthesia. Nurse Anesthetists (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists-CRNA) are the only advance practice nurses that are wholly independent practitioners, not requiring physician involvement in our anesthesia.
About me: happily married to my Texan Redneck Nurse, Mark, (yes, I know it's an odd combination)- 24 years to date. My passion is Dressage-ballet on horseback. Tiramisu- barn name Misu- is a relatively green, talented, Dutch Warmblood mare. I also have a passion for our natural world. Our houndy-mutty dog, Maggie, is my constant companion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nonstop action that's bound to capture your interest, May 22, 2001
By

Even though I'm an ER doctor and I've called in my share of medical helicopters to evacuate severely injured people to specialized trauma centers, the sound of a helicopter landing on the ER helipad always cranked up my pulse by a notch or two. Aircraft of any sort are exciting, and so are emergencies. Combine the two into a book, and it's bound to be interesting. Is this book? Yes. The author does a good job of immersing you in her stories, and once you begin reading this book you probably won't want to put it down. Not all of the book concerns her experiences in the CALSTAR air ambulance service; some of the material recounts her career as an ER nurse. Nevertheless, I found that material equally interesting. The only criticisms I have of the book (both of which are very minor) are: 1) The author tends to pull her punches. It seems to me that many authors are afraid to say what they really think for fear of offending some readers who possess contrasting viewpoints. I prefer that authors speak their minds, especially when their opinions were shaped by the experiences they're describing. When I began working in the ER I had virtually no opinions, but after a decade in the ER cauldron I've developed some very strong opinions. Likewise, most ER personnel I know harbor similar opinions that they're not shy about relating to one another, but when most of those folks sit down to write a book they clam up and sterilize their work. 2) The author describes the personality and appearance of several co-workers in her book, and in the center of it there's a group photo of the CALSTAR gang (in color, nonetheless). However, there isn't any accompanying caption to explain who is who.

Notwithstanding these minor flaws, Hudson produced a commendable book. In my opinion, this book is one of the best books in this genre. I've read every book that is even remotely related to emergencies, and many disappointed me because they have little to offer besides an attractive cover and catchy title. In contrast, Hudson's book is filled with nonstop action that's bound to capture your interest. (Review by Kevin Pezzi, M.D., author of "Believe It or Not! True Emergency Room Stories") Since my review is quite complimentary of her book, will you please leave in the "Review by Kevin Pezzi, M.D., author of Believe It or Not! True Emergency Room Stories" part? Thanks!

This review is from: Trauma Junkie: Memoirs of an Emergency Flight Nurse (Paperback)
Janice Hudson has written a book with the just enough action, combined with the ER-style jargon to make everybody interested in this type of book happy. She tells of the accidents, crimes and self-inflicted stupidity that cause the professionals like her to risk their lives for people like us. It will give you a glimpse into the world of nursing and emergency medicine. Good book!

Finally another book worth five stars! This book is simply the best of its kind. Janice Hudson and Trauma Junkie surpass by far the many other Emergency Medical books I've come across. She is truly a professional and experienced Medic. She delves into the precise medical techniques of every call with great clarity. After reading this book you almost don't need field experience... Yet she tells it all in such a story book fashion, what an interesting blend. This is the kind of book I mutter a silent prayer after every chapter that it grows thicker with 300 pages. Oh well, Janice, I'll just have to wait for your next book.
