Review
"Since there are relatively few trauma researchers working in university settings, many students are supervised by researchers or clinicians whose experience lies outside the field altogether" (p. vii). With these words, the editor demonstrates the need for a text that fills an academic near-vacuum in trauma research. This need is underscored by the fact that most criticism of trauma research findings focuses upon methodology issues. The editor has assembled an impressive collection of essays that cover the spectrum of trauma research. . . . While this book is targeted for graduate research students, the detailed, specific and practical information is certainly of significant value to everyone engaged in scientific investigation, publication, or consumption. . . . This is a serious text and a practical resource for everyone interested in trauma research. -- Family Violence & Sexual Assault Bulletin, Vol. 13, No. 1-2, 1997
Each chapter of Trauma Research Methodology was written by an expert in the field to guide the novice trauma investigator. The full spectrum of issues related to practical trauma research is covered in a detailed, readable manner. The presentation of research issues is so thorough, yet so accessible, that new researchers with interests other than trauma might find this book worthwhile reading as well. . . . If you want to conduct trauma research and would like some guidance on how to proceed, you will want to get this book. Even if trauma research is not your primary interest, you may still want to read this book. It provides an excellent introduction and overview for the whole research process. -- Psychiatric Services, September 1997
Trauma Research Methodology is a fine introductory textbook for clinicians who want to conduct research on the effectiveness of EMDR (or other clinical methods) for treating symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This would also be an excellent choice as a text for a college course on trauma research. The book covers essential aspects spanning much of the research endeavor, including initial literature searches and writing for publication. Its twelve chapters, contributed by eighteen experienced trauma researchers, are all easy to read and consistently offer practical advice that clinicians or researchers will find immediately helpful in designing and conducting trauma studies. -- EMDRIA Newsletter, June 1997
