The psycho-social needs of victims of rape and sexual assault are increasingly recognised and there is a need for a critical synthesis of knowledge and practice to support the development of training and best practice in the mental health and sexual health professions.

The Trauma of Sexual Assault provides an understanding of the theoretical underpinning of the wide range of clinical problems that can follow sexual assault. Focusing on adult victims of sexual assault, this book brings together research findings, theoretical perspectives and implications for treatment, longer term management, and future policy.
* The first text to consider the psychological impact of sexual assault on women and men
* Incorporates a comprehensive flow-through model of psychological and social management from the initial presentation of the assaulted person onwards
* A much needed reference, accessible to a wide range of professionals

Part of the Wiley Series in Clinical Psychology

From the Back Cover

Rape and sexual assault are common crimes in our societies, but work on its psychosocial impact and critiques of procedures and interventions are hard to find. The Trauma of Sexual Assault fills these gaps. It focuses on adult victims and opens up the debate with research findings, theoretical perspectives and implications for treatment, longer-term management and future policy.

Jenny Petrak and Barbara Hedge have skilfully drawn on the clinical practice of their authors to provide:
* the first text to consider the psychological impact of sexual assault on women and men
* a comprehensive flow-through model of psychological and social management from the initial presentation of the assaulted person onwards
* wide-ranging discussion of relevant issues, including culture, gender and sexuality, the assaulted and the assailant, and social and legal topics
* details of prevention and treatment, including the psychological and physical impact of sexual assault
The Trauma of Sexual Assault is a much-needed and accessible reference for clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors and therapists, nurses, the criminal justice system, and all professionals working in settings providing services for sexual assault.

5.0 out of 5 stars The trauma of sexual assault, July 6, 2003
Sexual assault or rape has been on the increase in many countries, or at least that is what we can find out if we look at the number of reported cases. In the United Kingdom in 1985 there were reported about 2,000 cases of rape offences against females, while in 1999 this number had increased to 8,000. This is maybe due to the fact that sexual assault is no longer a "hidden crime" ? It is interesting that both in American and British statistics the male as victim does not exist, but in this book the male as victim is also described.
This book, as part of the Wiley series in clinical psyvhology, is edited by Jenny Petrak, the Director of Clinical Psychology within the London NHS Trust and senior lecturer at the Royal London School of Medicine together with Barbara Hedge, Director of Clinical Training at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. Nineteen multidisciplinary contributors from the UK, USA and New Zealand have made this an important text on the psychological impact of sexual assualt on both women and men.
In 14 chapters with illustrative case examples you will find information on the history of rape, epidemiology, various treatment strategies, prevention, coping, forensic issues and directions for future research.
This text will be a good reference for the professional coming in contact with victims of sexual assualt.
