5.0 out of 5 stars Works like a charm
Upon receiving the product, I first verified that it worked in the U.S. without the converter enabled as a simple pass-through adapter. Once it passed this simple test, I gave it to my girlfriend who successfully used the converter in Hong Kong to step down the voltage at her hotel and at the airport. We purchased this Adapter/Converter for a trip to Thailand ..... fortunately, we had a back-up adapter/converter. The Travel Smart by Conair didn't work from day one. It's a poorly constructed, cheap plastic. No surge protection....and none of our appliances (hair dryer, electric toothbrush, etc) would work with it. Upon receiving the product, I first verified that it worked in the U.S. without the converter enabled as a simple pass-through adapter. Once it passed this simple test, I gave it to my girlfriend who successfully used the converter in Hong Kong to step down the voltage at her hotel and at the airport. In addition, her roommate at the hotel was from Beijing, China and was also able to use the device to charge her phone and use her laptop.

The adapter itself is made of plastic, so it's as durable as plastic can be. The knobs that slide along the side lock in place once you've fully extended the prongs. It's a little bulky compared to other adapters, but that's because it contains several mechanisms for various prongs and the voltage converter circuitry. It also holds the input plug very snug, and the output plug also feels like a sturdy connection to the wall outlet.

product worked like it was supposed to. I traveled to a few different countries and it worked in all of them. (Spain, England, Ireland) Very convenient to have an adaptor/convertor all in one!

I used it during a recent trip to Australia and the converter worked fine. But the converter is kind of flimsy and I had a tough time keeping it plugged in.

The unit is easy to use. It worked perfectly for my laptop. I did notice that for the camera charger, in the converter mode my charger became hot quickly so I could only charge for a few minutes at a time. And for my curling iron, the converter mode barely heated the iron while the adapator mode over-heated.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dont buy this!, July 27, 2011

My wife travel to Asia(220v), when she got there, she switched to the converter (220V to 110V), plug in her HTC sprint phone, the charging light came up, then less than 5 mins the charging light went off, she thought it complete the charge, but it was not. The kids wanted to play DS, but no battery, she put the DS charger, but it didn't charge(The DS charger was working fine when she was in SFO). It turns out both HTC phone adapter and DS adapter get burn out.

My advices: Don't buy this! unless you want take your own risk. I return back to Amazon and get full refund. RIP to my HTC phone adapter and DS adapter. Got my point?

4.0 out of 5 stars Works but appears to be a bit flimsy., September 20, 2011

I have been using this during my trip to Africa for the last 4 months and it works. I have noticed that sometimes when I plug in a two (2) pin plug (a regular 110 plug) that some some I have to unplug it an rotate the plug 180 degrees for it to start charging. I have been using it for my laptop, kindle and cell phone in adapter mode, and for my electronic toothbrush in converter mode.

Because of the size some times I feel as if it would fall out from the wall plug, but it has never done so. All in all it works and I would purchase it again. Note that the maximum wattage is 1875, therefore you would not be able to use some hair dryers.

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't work for the one thing I'd bought it for, August 11, 2011

This review is from: Travel Smart By Conair Adapter/Converter Combo with Surge Protection (Health and Beauty)
Had a business trip to the UK, and after reading about a ton of different adapter/converters, all of which seem to get pretty bad reviews, I finally settled on this one as the most hopeful of the bunch. The main electronics I was dealing with were my laptop (which was dual-voltage and only needed an adapter), my Kindle, and my Nintendo DS.

The laptop worked fine with this in both Converter and Adapter mode. The Kindle didn't work with it, though that wasn't a big deal since with the laptop plugged in, I could charge the Kindle with USB. I couldn't get the Nintendo DS to work with it either (and yes, I read the instructions, I switched the switch from adapter to converter). It didn't blow up or anything... the two devices just didn't get any power. I ended up switching it to adapter mode and plugging it into a "electric shavers only" outlet in the hotel bathroom which was 110v rather than their usual 240v and was able to get power to the DS that way.

So, long story short, the thing basically worked fine as an adapter but didn't do anything as a converter. I don't know if it was defective or what, but add mine to the list of complaints about the converter.

I am giving this adapter a four because I think it will work for other countries. If you are traveling to Cape Town, Africa, it will not work.
