Flawed cart for personal items
on December 10, 2009
The picture is incorrect. This cart looks similar, except it doesn't have the shelf at the bottom, which is fine for personal items, and has some additional features. It is also light weight, although not intended for shipping crates, but for briefcases, luggage, etc. The wheels are the largest I have ever seen on a cart intended for such items, (so it rolls easily and quietly) and when you fold up the cart, they fold also, making the entire folded cart something like 2 1/2" thick. There is a locking piece for the handle, since it folds. In order to be any lighter, it would either have to be flimsy or have plastic on it. As it is, it is light enough for those who cannot lift heavier items, and it easily fits in any car trunk with room to spare. When extended, the wheels do not touch the ground until you tilt the cart, so it won't roll away on its own when it sits on the ground.
The entire cart is long enough that even tall persons will not have to bend over when using it -- many others are too short. Short persons will not find it awkward, either.
I have several other carts, but wanted a lighter one, one that was longer at the handle, and that did not take up so much room in the trunk. This would be a good choice for someone who cannot carry things. It is sturdy enough that I expect it to last a long time, given care. The only drawbacks are that is is not inexpensive, and that it has a tendency for the wheels to start to fold up when sitting up on the ground, unless you have 5 pounds or more sitting on it. I can't tell much about the construction of the folding mechanism, but the wheels evidently have nylon gears to do so, an unknown sturdiness factor in the long run.
UPDATE 6 months later: The wheel folding mechanism did indeed break, so you have to fumble with it to get it to open up. While you open it up a little, you have to pull out each wheel, one at a time, and gently pull some more on the platform to open it up. This is easier than it sounds, but a little inconvenient. Otherwise, it is still excellent, so I am demoting it to 3 stars.
