About the Author

Michael Hilburn is a soccer (futbol) addict and an avid traveler, especially to Latin America, which is where he met his wife - a Bolivian. He, his wife (Fabiola) and daughter (Florencia) currently live in Wilmington, NC, USA but are intent on returning to live in Bolivia in the future.

"The La Paz airport is on the plateau called the Altiplano, at 4100 meters. From the Altiplano we descended into La Paz which is a city built in an enormous donga eating into the Altiplano plateau in the Andes. In the distance to the south-east can be seen the snow-capped mountain, Illimani, at one end of the Cordillera Real, and at the other, Illampu. The bus stopped so that we could get an almost bird's eye view of La Paz.

Astonishing!! The city sprawls through this huge donga which appears to be still eroding, some buildings actually being undermined and hanging out on a limb. The upper reaches of the city are where the less wealthy live, but lower down the donga are the better-to-do folk. We were taken to the El Dorado Hotel - very ordinary - in a main street where once again heavy rucksacks etc were humped, lifted, counted to all our rooms. What an extraordinary way to spend a holiday! "

Hilburn definitely captured the essence of Bolivia. Whether you are a first time vistor or a long time resident you will enjoy the compulations captured in this great book. A must read for anyone interested in the inside track to the culture of this intriguing land.

I highly recommend this to readers with a soul for adventure and a curiosity not easily satisfied. Entertaining and educational. I definitely will share with my five friends and brothers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Educative and entertaining, March 5, 2006
This review is from: Travel Diary: Bolivia (Paperback)
Hard to put down. Reads from a journal prospective of many adventurous sojourns to Bolivia. I can appreciate that because it gives a lot of different takes on various desitnations, all from individual travellers. Witty, humorous, and full of incredible experiences; but also some well learned lessons and places to avoid. This book has enlightened me to the romance and adventure of taking the back road while backpacking on my forthcoming trip to Bolivia.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent book for first time travellers to Bolivia, February 2, 2006
This review is from: Travel Diary: Bolivia (Paperback)
I used this book for my 3months Bolivia visit... it's a great guide for discovering Bolvia! I'm very interested in culture and cultural differences in a non-typical tourist way. The book contains lots of amazing details which I could not find in the Lonely Planet guide.

If anyone knows any other travel books written by Mr. Hilburn, please inform me about it: jebedaia@yahoo.com
