Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

This brief but idea-rich guide includes an annotated bibliography of 80 titles along with suggestions for both general and specific extended activities designed to enhance understanding of the books' settings. The authors recommend using a map or globe when introducing them. Titles are fairly standard; Blueberries for Sal, Stuart Little, Old Yeller, and Make Way for Ducklings are among those included. Trips can be real or imaginary, and locations can be marked on a chart or map. Interdisciplinary activities include songs, story mobiles, flip books, shoebox dioramas, travel brochures, nesting dolls, paper-plate crowns, photo journals, paper doll characters, games, virtual field trips, and more. "Using the Internet with Children" includes limited search strategies and lists of sites for award-winning books, virtual field trips, and maps and information on countries. Each title entry provides age level, a brief annotation, places visited, and URLs for additional information on the city/state/country. Appendixes include: "Books by Read-aloud Age"; "Award-winning Books"; and reproducible maps of the U.S. and world. There are indexes to author, location, and title. This book will assist those imparting the importance of setting as an influence on story, history, and reading enjoyment.
