We wanted to get an inexpensive chess set for our 10 year old to take places with her...one we wouldn't freak out about if she lost it, or pieces of it, or whatever.
This does the job!
Looks much better than expected, magnets are strong (can hold the board upside down & none'll fall off....till you shake it, of course)
Great deal for the price... or even for a bit more. :-)

Although this is not a game room quality set, I was very pleasantly surprised with the quality and look of this set. My daughter wanted a small set to carry in her backpack to school, and in the box, this measures about 10" x 5" x 1.75". It weighs just under 15 ounces. Although the pieces are plastic, they look very nice and classy. The board folds in (playing area facing out) which would be my only complaint, since the board can easily get scratched that way. All the pieces fit inside the closed board and the entire thing snaps shut.

I'm very happy with this set and recommend it for anyone who wants a very small portable chess set. The game folds out to 9.75" square, and each of the pieces have a minimal felt bottom hiding the magnet. My daughter was able to walk around with the chess set upside down, but if you shake it at all, the pieces will fall or slide right off. However, for most intents and purposes, I imagine most people do not walk with the board upside down so the magnets just help to prevent shifting, like if playing in a car or moving it from desk to desk in a classroom.

The box is very charming in a MADE IN CHINA way, with things like, "Exquisite and easy-carry" and "International Standard Good Materials Modern Colors Enlightenment & Entertainment". Whew... that was entertaining!

I'll definitely keep this company in mind in case I need other travel sized games.

Pros:
Small, lightweight and portable
It's fun to play with while on the go.

Cons:
Magnets come off easily. When I opened the package I noted several pieces without magnets (magnets came off).

My suggested fix (use crazy glue):
1. Put chess pieces in Ziplock plastic bag
2. shake Ziplock plastic bag with all the pieces vigorously
3. check for pieces with missing magnets
4. use glue (crazy glue or gorilla glue) to attach magnet back into piece

I purchased this chess set because I could not find a magnetic portable set anywhere else. I play chess quite a lot and found this cheap set to be quite useful. Let's just say as far as the magnets go, they are decent. You can turn the board upside down and they will stay, but if you shake it the bigger pieces fall off. In a bus though, it's really handy. I wish it came with a lock though, it does tend to fold in half unless you lay it on a flat surface. The pieces are nice, plastic and cheap yes but still decent. Overall I'd say it is worth the [...] bucks. It is cheap of course, the main flaw is the plastic bindings that will eventually wear out. I don't predict this set will last more than 5 years but for the price it's still a good bargain. It's portable and very convenient, (the coordinates are nice). The instruction sheet is a sad joke, it has many flaws as anyone who knows chess can easily point out. Although quality is not high, overall for the price I'd say 5/5. Anyone who goes on chess5 my username is also dan49442.

I bought this magnetic traveling chess set and have been happy so far. This set is great for camping and road trips. The pieces are plastic and are silver and gold, they have magnetic bottoms so they can stick to the metal board easy. The board opens up and has an area to store the pieces when not in use. This set does not come with a carrying case just the box it comes in. I have used this chess set many times and the plastic pieces and board is still up to par. The pieces are strong enough to set on the board and turn upside down and they will not fall off unless you shake it really hard. Over all it has been a nice chess set to take on trips and play.

I got this for my 9-year-old son and myself to play chess on a trip, in the car or in hotels. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the pieces and the case/playing board. The only caveats are that the board doesn't lay completely flat, and there is no way to keep it open when playing. Also, I wish the magnets were just a little bit stronger. For the money, however, this is a great set!

You can't beat the price! It's perfectly adequate for travel, and analysis. I am used to a higher quality of chess pieces, and a playing board, but for the price it's a good deal. I use for analysis while reading/studying chess lessons, and it's perfect. Magnets are good on the pieces, and the board is functional. I don't mind throwing it in the car just in case an impromptu game comes along down at the park, etc. I also don't mind when my 4 year old wants to play with the pieces because it was such a good price. Hope this helps.
