Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This is the only book on the market that completely covers the topic of theft prevention while traveling. Unfortunately most travelers are concerned about falling victim to violent crimes while traveling but realistically, you have a much greater risk falling victim to a pickpocket than to a street robbery while traveling. Many travelers think of themselves as "Travel Wise" when it comes to avoiding crime while on the road. However, you will be surprised at what you learn. Without fail all of the frequent travelers who have listened to this tape told me that they learned something, and recommend listening to it before your next trip. From the high school graduate taking his or her first backpacking trip across Europe, or the serious road warrior who travels 100 times a year, you are guaranteed to learn something from Detective Coffey.

About the Author

KEVIN COFFEY is an expert in crimes committed against travelers. He has personally seen or experienced virtually every travel safety issue first hand.

In 1978, he started working for the Inglewood Police Department, a suburb of Los Angeles, where he worked until 1980. In 1981 he began his career with the Los Angles Police Department where he currently holds the rank of Detective / Sergeant. In his 18 years with the police department he has received numerous awards and commendations. He has been selected as Officer of the Year, Detective of the Year, along with receiving the Los Angeles Police Department's Police Star Award.

In 1991, he founded the Los Angeles Police Department's Airport Crimes Investigations Detail, and as the Detective-in-Charge, was responsible for investigating thousands of crimes committed against travelers. In this position he was responsible for identifying the most common locations and methods used by professional thieves who target travelers at airports, hotels, and car rental agencies. He has also conducted thousands of interviews and interrogations of street robbers, luggage thieves, pickpockets, hotel burglars and other types of criminals who prey on the traveling public.

Mr. Coffey is still with the police department, and in his off-duty hours, he founded Corporate Travel Safety, a company that specializes in providing travel safety seminars and products. He has personally trained over 10,000 travelers in the area of travel safety, and has set up travel safety programs at several Fortune 100 companies. Some of his clients include Mattel, Motorola, Hewlett Packard, Toyota, Amgen, and Blue Cross, just to name a few.

He has become the Media's leading expert when it comes to travel safety. He has appeared on over 200 television stations both domestically and internationally. Most recently he made his second appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Other national programs which have featured him are, ABC's 20/20, CNN, CNBC, The Today Show, Leeza, C/Net, Europe's Sky News, The Travel Channel, in addition to more than 100 local television news stations across the country.

He is the author of two books, "Lies, Cons, and Stolen Briefcases" and "Traveler Beware! An Undercover Cop's Guide to Avoiding Pickpockets, Luggage Theft and Travel Scams.

When I opened the box and saw only 1 cassette I thought for a minute this was nothing more than an audio info-mercial to sell security items. Nothing could be further from the truth. The single 90-minute tape packs a wealth of information about personal and luggage security when traveling domestically and overseas (of course it is slanted towards an American audience). I've traveled extensively in my career and as a part-time tour guide in Europe and Russia. I'm pretty savvy about maintaing situational awareness, not being distracted etc. If you also are an experienced international traveller, you might know some of these hints as well; this tape is great as a refresher. If you don't travel often-well you DEFINITELY need to acquire a copy lest you become a victim. Highly recommended, especially for someone who is an infrequent traveller.

This book was very helpful to me in my travels. I am in sales and I do a lot of traveling and ever since I listened to the tape it has made me more aware of my surroundings in the airport and other areas that I was not aware of. It is amazing some of the scams Detective Coffey talked about. I would highly recommend this tape to anyone that wants to protect their properties while traveling on business or pleasure.

I have been traveling for the last 10 years, but have never traveled overseas. I had heard many stories and have had friends who have wallets and purses stolen gypsies and thieves but have had a hard time finding information that was in-depth. I saw the author on Oprah when she talked about this tape but never got around to buying it, but finally did before my first trip to Italy, Spain and Greece. The tape was just what I wanted, gave all the scams used by crooks. Of interesting note, the author has a web site... that gives additonal information and travel safety tips.
