Book Description

2004

The Traveler's Guide to the Gun Laws of the 50 States! The book that had to be written! Because you are subject to arrest for simply traveling from state to state with a personal firearm, some sort of guide has been badly needed for years. This excellent book covers all the basics for armed travel: vehicles, the glove box, open carry, loaded or not, weapon types, and more.

This book features the complete national reciprocity list, plus a list of every state's Attorney General's office!

Kentucky attorney Kappas has created an indispensable tool, while work is underway to restore our eroded rights. In the future, maybe, if you have a gun and you're not a criminal, that won't violate anything. Until then, get and read The Traveler's Guide to the Firearm Laws of the 50 States which, despite the title, includes Canada & Mexico too!

Read it before a trip, pack it, or leave one in your vehicle, so you know what to expect as you approach each state line. Clear writing gives you the basics for every state in one handy guide. Plus, each state is rated for its relative freedom, based on its gun laws, from zero to 100. See where your state ranks.

Softbound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concealed Carry, State By State, May 13, 2008

This review is from: Traveler's Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States (Paperback)
Scott Kappas' "Traveler's Guide to the firearm Laws of the Fifty States" provides an excellent overview of the legal environment facing anyone who wishes to transport firearms away from his or her home state. It begins with some useful definitions of frequently used terms, such as "Castle Doctrine," "affirmative defenses," and even terms which shouldn't require definition, but do, such as "loaded." (Some states consider a gun loaded if a nearby magazine has ammunition in it.) The bulk of the book is a state by state summary, starting with a "Traveler's Checklist," dealing with permitting, right of self-defense, concealed carry, open carry, and vehicle carry. Restrictions on assault weapons and machine gun ownership are also covered. This is principally a book about handguns and concealed carry laws. There is some mention of transporting long guns for hunting, but this book isn't written with the itinerant hunter in mind. An appendix covers travel to Canada and Mexico. Perhaps the most useful are the three final pages, displaying the reciprocity provisions each state has with other states. Kappas provides a map of the US so that each reader can shade in the states where his carry permit is recognized. As a Connecticut permit holder, my map remains mostly white, since the CT carry permit is recognized in only 11 states, none of them contiguous. I can only hope that future editions of this useful book will enable me to shade in more of that map.

Not as much information for each state as I was hoping for. There are better sources available that are currently on the market.
