Review

"Eloquent, amusing, and sensible." --The Washington Post

From the Inside Flap

"Perpetually interesting," Henry James said of the history-rich Hudson, and so it is, with the stunning Catskill Mountains, the brooding intensity of the Hudson Highlands, the greatest city in the world at its mouth -- and an extraordinary bounty of things to see and do along the way. Now in its third revised edition, Tim Mulligan's engaging guidebook (formerly titled The Hudson River Valley: A History and Guide) provides invaluable, up-to-the-minute suggestions on how best to enjoy the region's treasures:
-- Ponies and performing arts at Saratoga
-- Old Masters at the exquisite Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, Early American master-works and paintings of the Hudson River school at the Albany Institute of Art, furniture and handcrafts at the Shaker Museum in Old Chatham, and natural history at the Museum of the Hudson Highlands
-- Walking and driving tours of historic Hudson, Kingstons, Cold Spring, and Nyack, and the rolling farmland of Dutchess and Columbia counties
-- A celebrated view from the site of the once-famed Catskill Mountain House
-- Kykuit, the lovely Rockefeller estate, now open to the public for the first time plus
-- Dozens of bed and breakfasts, inns, restaurants, and antique shops recommended by those who know the Valley best -- the people who live there

We purchased this book for our INN guests who are interested in learning more about the interesting history of the Hudson Valley of NY. We have owned it for about 3 weeks and at least 5 guests have taken it overnight to read and each guest has returned it to us with very positive comments on the accuracy of the contents. We highly recommend this book for anyone who is going to visit the Hudson Valley of NY! Pat and Bill, Innkeepers

This is a terrific book if you are visiting the Hudson River Valley. Tim Mulligan includes history, architecture, art, places to stay and good restaurants. I like it so much I have given it to about 5 friends. I also used it as a reference in a travel lecture that I gave recently. Some guide books are dull but this is interesting to read.

We used this book and this book alone to plan our first week long trip to the Hudson River Valley. The authors suggestions helped us successfully plan a 10+ perfect trip - in selecting our hotels, restaurants and must see attractions. Our trip took us by car up the east side and back down the west side of the Hudson. It was wonderful to say the least and I dont feel we missed or left out anything. The Hudson River Valley is amazingly beautiful and full of historical wonderful places to visit. I would highly recommend using this book to plan your next trip - you wont be disappointed!

I used this book throughout a week-long journey through the Hudson Valley and agreed with all of Mr. Mulligan's assessments of the places we visited. The only caveat is that budget cuts have shortened hours that many of these places are open. Check the site's blog or call ahead.
