I have used this book on many of my forages into the Hudson River region and I have always found its inspired commentary, accurate information and insightful observations make it the perfect book for exploring this region. We purchased this book for our INN guests who are interested in learning more about the interesting history of the Hudson Valley of NY. We have owned it for about 3 weeks and at least 5 guests have taken it overnight to read and each guest has returned it to us with very positive comments on the accuracy of the contents. We highly recommend this book for anyone who is going to visit the Hudson Valley of NY! Pat and Bill, Innkeepers

5.0 out of 5 stars An unusual guidebook, August 7, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: The Traveler's Guide to the Hudson River Valley: Third Edition (3rd ed) (Paperback)
This guidebook to the historic Hudson River Valley, one of America's most beautiful and significant regions, is more than the usual travel book--it has a real literary flair to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide, June 18, 2010

I used this book throughout a week-long journey through the Hudson Valley and agreed with all of Mr. Mulligan's assessments of the places we visited. The only caveat is that budget cuts have shortened hours that many of these places are open. Check the site's blog or call ahead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Guide Book for the Hudson River Valley, March 3, 2010

This is a terrific book if you are visiting the Hudson River Valley. Tim Mulligan includes history, architecture, art, places to stay and good restaurants. I like it so much I have given it to about 5 friends. I also used it as a reference in a travel lecture that I gave recently. Some guide books are dull but this is interesting to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mid-Hudson Valley is special area, March 23, 2008
This review is from: The Traveler's Guide to the Hudson River Valley: Third Edition (3rd ed) (Paperback)
I met Tim Mulligan many years ago when a resident of the Hudson Valley. I've been to many of the places Mr. Mulligan mentions in his book and his reviews are mostly accurate.

Memories of the Mid-Hudson Valley (a snippet from my blog):

Don't miss the Mohonk Mountain House (hike around the trails above the lodge), the old Catskill Mountain House site and overlook, Hudson River painter F. Church's Olana home in the Greenport area. The unique light that appears above the Catskill Mountains (no wonder painters loved the place). Keep in mind that some of the food places Mr.Mulligan has referenced are gone, such as the Cafe Pongo in Tivoli. Long gone those magical Tivoli days daydreaming while upon Pongo's vintage front porch glide rocker with an artisan baked whole grain baguette filled with roasted vegetable, fresh pesto and chevre while pets brush by your feet on their way into the cafe for a lap of water or a crunch of something in dishes scattered about the floor while the irresistible smell of wild flowers and fresh baked foods wafts along on the warm Hudson Valley breezes. Eleanor Roosevelt grew up exploring this area and it's still very much a wondrous place today.

2.0 out of 5 stars Do you own research., January 10, 2011

This book was somewhat helpful, but I was able to use the internet to do most of the research for our trip. Buy a used copy cheap to identify what to research. Our trip was great. I would say that the area is larger than I expected and not as densely populated. The restaurants in the area were very disappointing.

I read this lovely book for genealogical purposes. The migratory path of our family was from Westchester County in the 1600s to Schoharie County in the 1800s. There are a few towns mentioned here where our people had lived.
The book begins in Albany going toward New York City. I read it backwards one chapter at a time to really make the trip in the same direction that our family went!
Who knows if I will really take this trip? I collected travel brochures on France for a dozen years and then I really went three times. When I take this trip I am bringing this guide.
