Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This is a thorough examination of one of the most fascinating places on earth. In a lavishly illustrated format, the author offers information on the plants, animals, geology, history, and native peoples of Monument Valley, located in the Four Corners area of the Southwestern states. Aitchison also supplies a complete listing of campgrounds, lodging, and guided tours throughout this sacred Navajo land. Personal anecdotes and experiences with the Navajo people punctuate the text, giving the reader a sense of warmth and understanding that can only come from a person who has spent an extensive amount of time in this timeless place. This unusual and beautiful guide deserves a spot in secondary geography and adult travel collections.

About the Author

Growing up as a fan of John Wayne Westerns, Stewart Aitchison thought he “knew” Monument Valley. A little over twenty years ago, through a series of lucky circumstances, Stewart met the extraordinary Gene Foushee, geologist and original owner of Recapture Lodge. Through Gene, Stewart now realizes that one lifetime is too short to fully appreciate and understand the remarkable natural wonders and human drama of Monument Valley. But he keeps trying. Presently, when not writing or photographing, Stewart escorts natural history trips on the Colorado Plateau, Southeast Alaska, and Mexico’s Baja. He is author of Grand Canyon: Window of Time, Death Valley: Splendid Desolation, Red Rock-Sacred Mountain: The Canyons and Peaks from Sedona to Flagstaff, A Guide to Exploring Oak Creek and the Sedona Area, and Hiking Arizona (with Bruce Grubbs), among others. He makes his home in Flagstaff, Arizona with his wife Ann and daughter Kate.

A new edition is much needed, revised to make lodging and road information current. Nice photos, but not that useful as a travel guide.
