More About the Author

I grew up in Minnesota in a family of seven children, all boys until the last one. After graduating from Dartmouth College I began to travel (I wished I'd been doing it while in college!) and found that writing about my experiences helped me understand the places and cultures I was encountering. I also discovered that newspaper and magazine editors responded as well, and that's how I got started working as a freelance writer. Not long after that I hooked up with James O'Reilly to write a series of mystery serials for the San Francisco Examiner, one of which ran for 104 episodes over five months. We then began writing travel stories together and in 1985 started a syndicated column, World Travel Watch, that has appeared in newspapers in five countries. In 1993 we founded Travelers' Tales with James's brother Tim O'Reilly, and since then we've published some 100 books. I teach workshops on the art and craft of the personal travel story on a regular basis: for information go to LarryHabegger.com.

4.0 out of 5 stars Discover Tibet through the eyes of travelers.., October 23, 2004

This review is from: Travelers' Tales Tibet: True Stories (Travelers' Tales Guides) (Paperback)
This book presents many true stories of visits to Tibet. Some are funny, some are cautionary, and some are inspiring. They cover many aspects of the countryside including ancient rituals, pilgrimages, searching for the clouded leopard, and, of course, the Dalai Lama. This isn't a political book. I don't think there needs to be two sides to the story..it consists of many stories-all different. It's a great read and nothing more is needed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting stories beyond what a guide book can offer like witnessing an ancient sky burial and working as an extra on a movie, October 1, 2009

This review is from: Travelers' Tales Tibet: True Stories (Travelers' Tales Guides) (Paperback)
This book is a collection of 27 true stories written by authors like His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Pico Iyer, Heinrich Harrer, Alexandra David-Neel, Lama Anagarika Govinda, and many others.

The stories include traveling over high mountain passes, witnessing an ancient sky burial, rebuilding an ancient monastery, making the pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, working as an extra on a Chinese movie set, and visiting the Jokhang Temple, Potala Palace, and Norbulingka in Lhasa.

I am a fan of the Travelers Tales series and find that they provide more memorable ideas about a place than just reading a guide book.

3.0 out of 5 stars A weak book in the series, March 29, 2003

This review is from: Travelers' Tales Tibet: True Stories (Travelers' Tales Guides) (Paperback)
Usually a book from the 'traveler's tale' series will feature a healthy mix of stories of different genre; which enables its reader to understand a nation from many different prospective. However, the stories in this 'Tibet' volume are too politically dominated. I don't think this book present a holistic view on Tibetan culture.
