Book Description

Change is a process that happens over time. We can adapt to new circumstances and modify our behaviors and attitudes that are not good for us, but first we need to be willing to change; then we need a foundation of inner strength to become ready and finally we can change.

Rarely do people change without going through this process unless the pain of staying the same outweighed the fear of doing something different. We will sit in our “stuff” until the unpleasant consequences of our actions become unbearable. Until the pain gets so bad we must change or die. And, some people would rather die than change—and do.

There is another way. With the right methods we don’t need to suffer like a tooth gone bad waiting until our head is throbbing in agony before we call the dentist and ask to be seen immediately. With the right methods we can choose to give up what doesn’t work for us before it becomes excruciating.

That is what this book is about. Your reality will be validated—that change is difficult. But you will examine exactly what you very much do want to change but haven’t been able to so far. You will gain a true understanding of what it takes to make a change and have it stick. Most importantly, you will learn practical skills to transform at your own pace.

The key to long-lasting change is at your pace, in your own unique way. Making changes in your life is personal. It is based on two factors: being willing and ready. Be willing to honor your personal pace; have faith in the process of getting ready. It will get you where you want to go.

Reference will be made throughout the book to this special principle of being “willing and ready” to change by removing the roadblocks that have gotten in the way. There are two types of roadblocks.

1) External ones that can’t be controlled, such as a loved one getting sick or dying, a tornado or other natural disaster occurring and obviously stock market fluctuations.

2) Internal roadblocks we create ourselves when we feel threatened. These are protections that often become self-defeating beliefs and behaviors.

If these ideas make sense and you are comfortable about what you feel, then this book is for you. Take a risk and follow this process. You will make the changes you want for yourself. The journey may not be entirely painless, but it will make traveling through this book (and through life) worthwhile. So come with Arlene on a journey and discover the essence of what she believes with all her heart:

First be WILLING to give up old habits that are keeping you from living the life you desire. Being willing means you are agreeable to these terms:

You are willing to change your perception; to make a commitment to begin; to give up resentment, grudges, self-victimization and denial. You are willing to practice acceptance, you are willing to forgive yourself and others; you are willing to open yourself to new ideas.

Second be READY to give up your wornout habits. Being ready is quite different from being willing: Being ready is having the capability. To be ready is a developmental task. When you were small, first you learned to sit, then crawl, then stand, then walk and at last, talk. You may have been willing to walk and talk, but you were only able to do it when you were ready—not when your folks were.

We can only take the next step when we are ready. But, when you are ready you don’t have a problem practicing skills to make your life easier. When you are ready, you just do it. However, it does require work to become ready. Just as you practiced over and over until you finally took your first steps, as you had to get ready to walk. Your body needed time to build the muscle support that got you ready to walk.

The difference now is what you need to get ready. You would still need muscle support not to walk, but to walk five miles, if you have been sedentary. However, as an adult to become ready to leave self limiting roadblocks behind, you need “inner muscle” support. That is what getting ready to change means building inner strength. It is the groundwork to begin making your own positive choices. It is being ready to choose that makes change possible. Until you have developed this substructure, you may flounder and fail at moving past your limitations.

The methods for being willing and getting ready are woven throughout this book. In each chapter you will discover a number of different processes. For instance, in chapter two, you will find a list of 13 power points that will pave the way to being ready. It is like being on a ladder and working on each point. Each skill it offers gets you to the next rung until you reach the top.

Take your time. Each leg up is a support for the next one. Each step you take will bring you closer to becoming an independent thinker. Try out some of the suggestions, work on the ones that “fit” for you. Live by them and soon Remember it is at your own pace and in your own time. You will be ready to travel beyond your life’s roadblocks.

One more observation: Every book you read and learn something is because you let your mind focus on the words and ideas and then gave yourself free rein to wander through your own thoughts and come to your own conclusions. When you center on the themes the author has in mind and then let your imagination sort through what is meaningful to you, you usually have a number of “AHA” experiences those flashes of creativity and intuitive feelings that are the core of who you are. These moments are the gems and riches that make life worth living.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Arlene has chosen to dedicate her time, energy and career to helping you overcome your personal life roadblocks. She, like many of us, including me, has suffered behind her own barriers, some hurled at her by circumstances and people beyond her control, some self-imposed. But at a pivotal point in her life, Arlene made a conscious choice to defy those obstacles, blast through them and stop putting them in her own way.

Her candor and willingness to share some of the intimate details of her life is positively courageous. In this book, she doesn’t preach from a mighty pulpit, nor does she sit in judgment. She stands beside you, puts her arm around your shoulder and travels with you on the journey toward a less complicated, and therefore saner, life.

I recognized myself in this book within the first few pages, and then over and over again, and I suspect you will, too. Whether born and raised in a “perfect” family environment or a not so perfect one, nobody is immune to the destructive power of roadblocks. Take the Kennedy family, for instance. All the money, power, influence, beauty and charisma they individually and collectively possess have not protected them from suffering. Sure, many of their most severe problems were brought about by the cruel and malicious acts of others. But some have not. The Kennedy’s have experienced the ravages of self-imposed roadblocks like drug and alcohol abuse and marital infidelity.

But, do you notice something? They keep moving forward, continually demonstrating faith, dignity and grace in the face of adversity. That kind of fortitude does not come naturally, though. We are not born with it. But we can learn to face our fears and work through our problems and insecurities without allowing them to destroy us, no matter what our age, social status or circumstances. We can choose to end our destructive behavior at any time. That is what this book is all about.

Arlene wants you to stop suffering. She wants to teach you how to abandon your unfounded belief that you’re not good enough, smart enough, special, not worthy of love or praise or success, that you have no talent, don’t fit in and your life is one big joke. Most of us, especially we females, grow up with a serious lack of self-esteem that we carry into adulthood. Our preoccupation with dodging and tripping and falling over roadblocks, both imposed and self-imposed, becomes a constant routine. Worse, it becomes our companion. Well, Arlene is here to say ENOUGH!

One of the most powerful aspects of this book is the way Arlene has organized it and the process she puts forth is a journey. It starts out slowly, with an awakening of sorts. It continues one step at a time until it eventually leaves you moving ahead with confidence.

Along the way, there are concise reminders that life works better when you believe in yourself and in what you are doing. There are lessons and exercises to help you examine your problems by looking at them objectively. Of greatest significance, you move through this book at your own pace.

Arlene’s plan for Traveling Beyond Life’s Roadblocks: Creating a Life of Choice acknowledges that your individual needs, your unique perspectives and your personal way of doing things are your greatest assets. She wants you to take her words and apply them to your life in a way that makes sense for you.

But what Arlene really, passionately hopes this book will do for you is light a fire in your heart. If you have a burning desire, Arlene wants you to fan that flame, let it blaze and pursue your dreams with a vengeance. It is impossible to move forward if you are emotionally stuck in the past and Arlene wants you to hold your head high and focus on creating what’s ahead, not merely accepting what you have come to believe is your lot in life. She wants you to learn how to break your cycle of self-doubt and bust out of the soap opera mentality that takes you from one chaotic scenario to another. She wants you to stop reenacting your parents’ bad marriage or your painful childhood. She wants you to stop placing blame on others. She wants you to choose to live a fulfilling life and offers useful tools to get you started and keep you going. My congratulations to Arlene for traveling beyond her roadblocks and writing this book for you. Congratulations to you for reading it. By doing so, you have acknowledged your worth and begun your journey. You have taken the first steps in Traveling Beyond Life’s Roadblocks and Creating a Life of Choice. You are ready to learn how to handle crises and challenges in a way that builds, not compromises, your character. You are ready to stop questioning your competence and make the most of your abilities. You are ready to tap into your spirit and trust your intuition. You are willing to channel your positive energy and effectively manage your negative energy. You are taking a stand, like Arlene has by writing this book, that you are confident enough in your ability to be the creative director, the author, the sculptor, the CEO, of your own life. Hooray for you for taking command! Instead of passively sitting in the back of a rocking boat desperately trying not to barf, you have taken the helm and are steering your vessel away from turmoil toward calmer waters. Gemini Press
