This review is from: Traveling Through Idioms: An Exercise Guide to the World of American Idioms (Paperback)
As a teacher of English to international students, I'd highly recommend this text. It also works well for native English speakers or even students studying on their own. The range of exercises is a lot better than any other idiom text I've used, including Idioms in Action and Opening Doors. Most other idiom texts are set up like dictionaries and their usage is limited by their format. Traveling through Idioms is both imaginative and entertaining. The students loved it and put their new language to immediate use. There are also lots of beautiful photographs. The section To the Teacher has lots of additional tips on how to use exercises in a variety of ways. The book focuses on all the important aspects of language acquisition: listening, speaking, comprehension, writing. I also liked the text, and know students did, too, because it respects all cultures and incorporates their differences into the exercises. Unike many texts that focus solely on Engish speaking cultures (U.S., Britain, etc.), this text really raises discussion questions that give students a chance to talk about home countries AND learn about U.S. The chapters and photos are based on one person's travels throughout the U.S., specifically as she visits 10 cities. I loved the text. It's rare to find one that hits the spot!
