Most of the book reads like any standard travel book. Arranged alphabetically by state, you'll find hotels in both small towns and major cities, with a list of icons showing what amenities you can expect. Instead of descriptions of restaurants or spas, you'll find a sentence or two outlining pet policies. Here, a careful reading can save you a bundle. Although many hotels are happy to house animals, surcharges range anywhere from $5 total to $100 per night and, in some cases, only particular species of small size are accepted. This section cautions readers to confirm the current policy in advance. The last thing you want to discover upon arrival with your two labs is that the policy was changed the day before you made the reservations.
Other than these listings, information is relatively limited, but can be helpful to newcomers to the world of pet vacations. Contact information is provided for several airlines, as well as emergency animal health-care suggestions and advice for buying safe traveling equipment. Dog owners will appreciate the list of off-leash dog parks throughout the U.S., which includes rules for national parks and forests. In fact, with all its practical information, you may find this book puts your regular pet sitter out of a job! --Jill Lightner --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Traveling With Your Pet The AAA PetBook,
By Melissa (Illinois) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Traveling With Your Pet (Paperback)
This is a good source book if you are strictly looking for help with finding accomodations where your pet can stay with you. There is a short chapter on travel tips-things you need to keep in mind of you are planning to take your pet along in the car or on a plane. There are also listings for national public lands in the US and Canada that allow pets as well as a listing of emergency vet clinics by states. As I stated, this is strictly a resource book. If you're looking for "fun vacation activities with your pet", you'll have to look at a different book, but this is a good starting place when you need to make reservations to spend the night somewhere while on the road.

Don't Leave Home Without It (Or Your Pet),
By A Customer
This review is from: Traveling With Your Pet (Paperback)
We drove across East Coast to West Coast with two fairly large dogs using this book to reserve our lodgings along the way. The information was accurate and well-organized. Listings included fees charged for pets at certain rooms, so we were able to avoid any extra charges. The general information on pet travel was also useful. I heartily recommend this book to anyone traveling with a pet.

A must-have for the road,
By Gina Spadafori "http://www.petconnection.com" (Northern California, USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Traveling with Your Pet: The AAA Petbook (Paperback)
I travel from CA to FL and back every year, almost a 6,000-mile roundtrip with three dogs, two of them large retrievers. I couldn't survive without the listings in this book. Pet policies do change, so make sure you have the most current edition so you're less likely to be surprised on the road. -- Gina Spadafori, syndicated pet-care columnist and author of "Dogs For Dummies," "Cats For Dummies" and "Birds For Dummies"
