Traveling With Your Pet The AAA PetBook,
By Melissa (Illinois) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Traveling With Your Pet (Paperback)
This is a good source book if you are strictly looking for help with finding accomodations where your pet can stay with you. There is a short chapter on travel tips-things you need to keep in mind of you are planning to take your pet along in the car or on a plane. There are also listings for national public lands in the US and Canada that allow pets as well as a listing of emergency vet clinics by states. As I stated, this is strictly a resource book. If you're looking for "fun vacation activities with your pet", you'll have to look at a different book, but this is a good starting place when you need to make reservations to spend the night somewhere while on the road.

Don't Leave Home Without It (Or Your Pet),
By A Customer
This review is from: Traveling With Your Pet (Paperback)
We drove across East Coast to West Coast with two fairly large dogs using this book to reserve our lodgings along the way. The information was accurate and well-organized. Listings included fees charged for pets at certain rooms, so we were able to avoid any extra charges. The general information on pet travel was also useful. I heartily recommend this book to anyone traveling with a pet.

A must-have for the road,
By Gina Spadafori "http://www.petconnection.com" (Northern California, USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Traveling with Your Pet: The AAA Petbook (Paperback)
I travel from CA to FL and back every year, almost a 6,000-mile roundtrip with three dogs, two of them large retrievers. I couldn't survive without the listings in this book. Pet policies do change, so make sure you have the most current edition so you're less likely to be surprised on the road. -- Gina Spadafori, syndicated pet-care columnist and author of "Dogs For Dummies," "Cats For Dummies" and "Birds For Dummies"

VERY helpful,

not only does this list multiple hotels in the cities i've traveled to/from, but it lists emergency animal clinics, dog parks, and dog-friendly national parks. good-to-know stuff. it stays in my car for easy reference.it is also more specific than most hotel websites that simply state "most pets accepted" or "some pets allowed". it will state whether or not a hotel will require you to bring a crate for Fido, and if the pet-friendly rooms are in the "designated pet rooms", and which hotels have a one-time only pet fee.

Adequate, but limited selection,

This review is from: Traveling With Your Pet the AAA PetBook: the AAA guide to more than 12,000 pet-friendly, AAA-RATED lodgings across the United States and Canada (Paperback)
Over the past several years, I've use the AAA guide, but found that since it only lists AAA motels, I miss a lot of good places to stay. I now prefer The Pet Travel and Fun Authority, since it has twice as many listings and also entire chapters on things to do with your pet when traveling.

We are on our 3rd annual Traveling With Your Pet (8th ED.). We do quite a bit of traveling with our Miniature Austrailian Shepherd. This book is the best resource we have found for traveling with pets. The book has the usual AAA ratings for places, along with details of pet policies for each place. We have tested our book against several online sites, and although you may occasionally find a different place online which is not in this book, overall the book is the most thorough of all resources we have seen.
On knock, which is not directly related to the book, is the fact that some hotels and motels do not disclose their pet policies to AAA. For example, some put pet owners only in smoking rooms or other sub-standard rooms. Also, some hotels and motels charge $75 or more for one night as a pet fee, and in our opinion such places are not "pet friendly" and should not be in the book. So, our recommendation is to use the book as a starting place, but call to make sure the policy is as stated in the book and to make sure it has not changed since publication.

Reliable guide for pet-friendly lodging,
This review is from: Traveling with Your Pet (Traveling with Your Pet: The AAA Petbook) (Paperback)
Just put this newly purchased guide to the test during a trip through parts of Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas with our 60-pound dog. The hotel and motel listings are very accurate and up-to-date, so we had few surprises when calling to book rooms or arriving at properties. The only improvements I would suggest are more recommendations for outdoor dog play places (especially those that are leash-free) and for restaurants with outdoor dining areas that permit dogs. We had fairly good success improvising leash-free play zones in national forest areas off the highways and were able to find some eating places with patios or decks that permitted dogs...

Great handbook to travelwith so that you know in advance what hotels will accept pets. I would always recommend that you call the establishment first as rules do change.

A necessity when taking car trips with dog,

7 months ago I packed a U-haul to move from Ohio to Washington (state). My two puppies made the journey with me. I don't know what I would have done without the book. It was invaluable to finding lodgings for the night. As with AAA's hotel rankings and reviews, most were dead on.
The book advertises that it contains information on dog parks. I do not recommend this book if you want information on dog parks. It would be better to research the area and its dog parks ahead of time.

Traveling with Your Pet by AAA,
This review is from: Traveling with Your Pet (Traveling with Your Pet: The AAA Petbook) (Paperback)
Excellent, accurate book that allowed us to plan our trip without worrying about where to stay with our pet. I loaned it to a friend who was traveling out west and they loved the book so much I gave it to them and now have to buy another copy! I keep it on file should we ever have to evacuate due to a hurricane. We'll all go to the same hotel with our pets!
