Book Description

March 15, 2000
This text covers the period from September 1944 until January 1945, following the course of the Allied advance first to the Siegfried Line and then to the Rhine. Some of the fiercest and bloodiest fighting of the Second World War took place during this period and the book looks at the disaster which befell the British forces at Arnhem, the subsequent Allied liberation of Brussels and Antwerp, the taking of the bridge at Nijmegen, the Battle of the Bulge and the heroic American defence of Bastogne as well as the Rhine crossings which opened the way for the entry of Allied forces into Germany itself.
--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

These insightful new titles represent a good start to a unique travel series that attempts to re-create some of the fiercest and most critical battles of World War II through photographs, maps, eyewitness quotes, and captivating narratives. Shilleto (The Fighting Fifty-Second) and Tolhurst (The Battle of the Bulge) reconstruct the scenes and mood of the crucial battles of Normandy, France, and tell the reader where to go and how to get there, providing information on museums, monuments, cemeteries, memorials, and statues. Whiting, a distinguished military writer and historian who saw combat himself, describes battles in which the resolve of the Allies was tested and a revitalized German army emerged amidst an elaborate system of defenses, eventually loosing to a superior allied force. He captures the flow of events and sentiments as he guides the tourist through selected sites on a battlefront 400 miles long and 70 miles deep. Both guides retain a historical sensitivity that one hopes will be a hallmark of the entire series; even though they are intended for tourists, they still succeed in fully conveying the ordeal of combat. Historically enlightening, touristically informative, educational, thorough, and enjoyable, these books are recommended for all libraries.DEdward K. Owusu-Ansah, Murray State Univ. Lib., KY

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for the casual traveler to Germany looking for WW2 sites, August 3, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: A Traveller's Guide to the Battle for the German Frontier (Traveller's Guides to the Battles & Battlefields of WWII Series) (Paperback)
If you are looking for an easy-to-follow guide book highlighting some of the key WWII sites to visit in Europe then I don't recommend this book. If you are a die-hard military buff looking for detailed and laboriously researched information about WWII battles along the border of France and Germany in the Belgium and Luxembourg area then you will appreciate this book.

Fairly useful, but more detail, especially maps, are needed to help one from getting lost when touring the area. The many eyewitness accounts are appreciated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book!!!, June 4, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: A Traveller's Guide to the Battle for the German Frontier (Traveller's Guides to the Battles & Battlefields of WWII Series) (Paperback)
This book is wonderful for WWII buff's who live in Europe and have the time to travel around and see all the battle sites. The directions are easy to follow and you will end up finding sites that you never would have otherwise. Some of the places in the book are deserted and 'off the beaten path' of normal travelers. All of the books that they have in this series (Normandy, etc) are highly recommended!
