Book Description

Travellers - Thomas Cook April 1, 2007
The Greek island of Crete lies in the Mediterranean and is the southernmost point of Europe. It abounds with archaeological remains, principally those of the ancient Minoan civilisation, which climax in the world-famous ruins of Knossos and Festo. It is also blessed with an intrinsically Mediterranean landscape, lifestyle and culture. Despite coastal development, the opportunity to escape the crowds is never far away. The island's historic towns such as Rethymno and Chania are perfect for exploring on foot and experiencing traditional Cretan culture. The eastern and northern coasts are the place to go for beach holidays and nightlife whilst the west is the greenest, most mountainous region, offering spectacular hiking, mountain villages and unspoilt coastal towns. All over the island authentic Cretan cuisine, the healthiest in the western world, is available in hospitable tavernas. Crete's highlights for the traveller include: discovering the amazing archaeological remains of the ancient Minoan civilisation at Knossos, Festo and Archanes and many other sites across the island; relaxing on the beach and enjoying the nightlife in Crete's upmarket beach resorts; scuba diving, windsurfing and sailing; exploring the island's historic towns studded with Venetian, Turkish and Greek architectural gems; and experiencing Cretan hospitality in an authentic taverna. This title is part of a range of popular, compact guidebooks perfect for planning all sorts of holidays - whether long-haul, short-haul, regional tours and city breaks. Full of useful information on walks and tours, accommodation and eating out, shopping options and top travel tips, they're all you need for your holiday right at your fingertips. Their features include: user-friendly design; 180 colour photographs & 15 colour maps; easily accessible A-Z format for key practical information; and feature spreads to illuminate cultural & historical background.

I've spent months exploring Crete with several different guide books; some good, some inadequate, and some filled with errors. Thomas Cook's guide is the best for accurate background information, cultural context, and precise directions.
