Book Description

Traveller's History of Russia May 1997
A Traveller's History of Russia gives a comprehensive survey of the country's past from the earliest times through the era of "perestroika" and the end of the Soviet Union right up to the present day. The reader first learns about prehistoric Russia and its nomadic invaders, then the rise of Muscovy with its colorful panoply of rulers from Ivan Moneybags to Ivan the Terrible; the despotism of the Romanovs and the Russian Revolution are discussed in depth.

Then follows an account of the rise of the Soviet state, its world role and recent changes. The up-to-the-minute conclusion analyzes the Soviet collapse and its devolution into 15 separate republics, the tragedy of the Chechen War, and Vladimir Putin's election.

This handy paperback is fully indexed with a chronology of major events and a gazetteer cross-referenced to the main text. Illustrated with line drawings and historical maps.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good history of Russia, June 4, 2003
This review is from: Traveller's History of Russia (Paperback)
The book covers so much ground that it can't go into any depth, but that doesn't stop the authors from giving a complete view of the highlights of Russia history. It starts before the Mongol horde invaded, and continues through Yeltsen, and ends with Putin's taking office. (And with a 2001 publication date, that's about all you could expect!)

For those interested in more information, the books lists it's sources (broken down by chapter), as well as a recommended reading list. It also includes a list of rulers, and a timeline that starts at 830 BCE!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to the history of multiethnic Russia, November 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Traveller's History of Russia (Paperback)
If you want to know more about how the country of Russia evolved through the years and how the country went from a tsarist system to socialisim/communism I can highly recommend this book. It is written in a straightforward manner which enlightens the reader and at the same time entices one to want to be more knowledgeable about historical incidents not only about Russia but other countries and cultures.

Regards, D'Vante

1.0 out of 5 stars fully revised and updated? Not so!, July 23, 2007
This review is from: Traveller's History of Russia (Paperback)
In hand are the fourth and fifth editions of A traveller's history of Russia. Or is it Russia and the USSR? Both forms appear in both editions. The fifth (2006) appears to be a verbatim reproduction of the fourth, with the addition of a paragraph on terrorism on p. 293. Even the preface is unchanged.

The 4th ed. (2001) has such remarks as "what we now know as the USSR" (p. 1) and "The USSR is the largest country on the globe (p. 2)." Chapter 17 is captioned "The end of the Soviet Union." Such poor writing qualifies as misinformation. I view this publication askance. Especially since the covers of both these editions have "fully revised and updated."
