Malta's central section, stretching from the Victoria Lines to the Valletta conurbation, is a region of gentle hills, terraced fields, farmsteads and a number of ever-expanding villages and towns. The Victoria Lines, following the natural escarpment across the island, is a chain of British -built forts, stretching from Madliena in the east to the great Bingema Fort in the west. These were built to defend the most populated parts of the island from enem landings in the west. Soutn of the Victoria Lines is Mdina, the jewel in Malta's Crown ad a must for ay visitor. The cit's dynamic cathedral dome and the rear walls of Malta's former capital rise above the plains of central Malta and command a huge sweep of the Maltese landscape. Just outside Mdina is the suburb of Rabat, best known for the labyrinth of catacombs beneath its streets. It is also a town of craftsmen, some of whom can be seen at work in the nearby village of Ta'Qali.
