4.0 out of 5 stars A genuinely fresh and enthralling sound.A truly great comebak., July 5, 2009
Oi Va Voi came together in the late 1990s when trumpeter Lemez Lovas, drummer Josh Breslaw, bassist Leo Bryant, clarinettist Steve Levi, guitarist Nik Ammar and violinist Sophie Solomon pooled their diverse musical backgrounds in left-field jazz, hip-hop, rock bands, drum 'n' bass and Jewish klezmer.
With the addition of K.T.Tunstall on guest vocals, their debut album fused modern dance music, singer-songwriter sensitivity and their Jewish cultural heritage with global rhythms drawn from Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean.
Having endured a trio of body blows with the loss of singer KT Tunstall and founders Sophie Solomon (violin) and Lemez Lovas (trumpet), Oi Va Voi have regrouped brilliantly. Reuniting the group with the producers of their first album, "Laughter Through Tears" (Grammy winners Kevin Bacon and Jonathan Quarmby) , the new CD is the realisation of 5 years hard work and the coming together of a band on top of their form and with a full understanding of the way forward.
In singer Bridgette Amofah, they've discovered an extraordinarily versatile and expressive voice, while new violinist Anna Phoebe and trumpeter David Orchant prove they can fire up a feral Balkan Gypsy storm every bit as effectively as their illustrious predecessors. Levi also emerges as a total star, both as an instrumentalist and a haunting singer who understands the profundities of the cantor tradition but renders the form thrillingly fresh and new.
"Travelling the Face of the Globe" finds them recapturing the spirit that a few years ago earned them a brace of nominations and world critics' acclaim and proves that the vision that originally inspired the group remains more important than the individuals who have passed through it.
That vision, of course, involves the fusion of modern dance beats with their Jewish cultural heritage and rhythms drawn from Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean and beyond.
Here that vision is not only intact but is expressed with a clarity and focus that eclipses even 2003's Laughter Through Tears.
A strong hint of Jewish klezmer is there on the chilling but wonderful opening track "Waiting", and there's a Yiddish track from Hungarian singer Agi Szaloki, "S'Brent", mourning the Warsaw ghetto.
Their sound remains acoustic, with an ear for sweeping melodies, a touch of introspection and a promiscuous interest in global, international alternative music.
After a great debut and a few years of meandering, Oi Va Voi are back on form.
It's a truly great return.
My favourite tracks: "S'Brent" and "Foggy Day".
Have a very pleasant listening experience.
