5.0 out of 5 stars Howe keeps expanding his horizons... June 25, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Guitar virtuoso Steve Howe [Yes,Asia,GTR,ABWH] doesn't show intentions slowing down in his career. This year alone, he manage to put out 3 recordings, Asia's Omega, the new edition of his already famous demo recordings, Homebrew 4, and this live version of the Haunted Melody album. Here The Steve Howe Trio, who are integrated by Steve, his son Dylan on Drums, and Ross Stanley on Keys [Hammond], take their show on the road to indulge their fans with their "jazzy" sound. Steve, better know for the guitar work on the progressive premier rock bands Yes & Asia, show us a new and refreshing jazz sound, obviously powered by one of his mayor influences, guitar legend Kenny Burell. In this recording you could hear a version of the incredible master of jazz organ, Jimmy Smith's Blue Bash, and versions of Siberian Khatru & Close To The Edge, previously recorded with Yes. This two are the only ones with a rock sound, but also them, have a refreshing new twist. Kenny's Sound is an obvious tribute to Kenny Burell. Definitely a masterpiece, a must have...

5.0 out of 5 stars Steve Howe is a Jazz Guitarist October 9, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
When I read the opinion " Steve Howe playing jazz?" that makes me wince.
Huh? What have you been listening to after all these years? Steve Howe is a jazz guitarist. I know of no other guitarist who plays so many styles of world class caliber, acoustic and electric styling's of jazz, rock, classical, country and pedal steel (who else plays pedal steel like Steve)? But underneath it all; the notes, the chords, the phrasing, imo are jazz voicing's. Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, Barney Kessel, Howard Roberts, Joe Pass, Tal Farlow, Chet Atkins, et al to me this is the underlying style that Steve plays.
Listen to his guitar work, solo and with YES, are you saying this is only rock guitar? Straight ahead jazz guitar is all through the YES catalog, it is only natural that Steve play in the classic B3, Drum, Guitar trio format.
Also, the level of musicianship that Steve achieves; the compositions, the arrangements, this is a master class in harmony and song structure.
Steve Howe has virtuosity across the guitar spectrum, a few come close and are technical virtuosos but I cannot think of another guitarist in the rock era that has his versatility.

3.0 out of 5 stars Steve Howe playing jazz? July 12, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This disc is ok but Steve is not a a good choice in this setting. The organ player has a much better feel for the pace, the licks, the chord progressions and nailing the solos, which really surprised me. I was really excited when I spotted this recording, being a Yes fan for 30+ years but also listening extensively to Hammond B3 trios. This venture is not up to par with the likes of Tony Monaco, Jimmy Smith, Deep Blue Organ Trio, Larry Golding etc. If you want to hear old Yes songs in this format, it's mildly interesting. The straight ahead jazz is clumsy at best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mature Yes & Jazz Fan's Dream ! August 1, 2011
Format:Audio CD
What?? Whats the point of comparing? Don't forget Kenny Burrell is no Wes Montgomery and, and, Josh Redman is no Charlie Parker. But are they worth hearing? Yes!

I'm especially impressed with Dylan, as I actually prefer his jazz playing. I'm happy with the organ player and I have seen Tony Monaco/great; Deep Blue Organ Trio/great; Larry Goldings/great etc. etc.

Actually, I hear Grant Green in here. But if your looking for anyone but Steve Howe...that will "make" it disappointing. Steve has never tried to be like someone else.

Couldn't be happier! A Dream, I never dreamt, come true.
