5.0 out of 5 stars Nick on form as is usual, September 18, 1998

This review is from: Travels as a Brussels Scout (Hardcover)
NIck Middleton as usual delivers the goods. He carries on where he left off delivering a humorous account of the current EEC. His political and economic insight to the region is witty and informative, but as usual he writes with a subtle sarcasm, never shying away from providing the reader with an informative view of the European continent. I would also thoroughly recommend trying to get hold of his earlier work "Last Disco in Outer Mongolia".

4.0 out of 5 stars Pre-PC Age, Actual Funny Observant Scouting, October 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is hilarious in parts. I mean you could say the author is bit stereotypical, but that is what cultures are, items or actions that are at the forefront and most prominent. Some chapters as I recall are brief and you want more. His descriptions though are priceless.
And they are true, first-hand mostly accounts, so they did happen.

If you have done any traveling to Europe, especially during the EU build-up, pre-EU, or even after, you can certainly identify with some things and if not you can certainly see the absurdity of some of the things of making this overnight almost amalgamation into a single entity while trying to deal with every nations' separate culture, pet peeves, ideals, and thoughts on the other cultures.

It's a good read because there is no book I know of really like it and it has that same American call-it-like-you-see-it feel of Mark Twain traveling Europe. Some is grostesque, harsh, funny, dead-on, dead-pan humor, some is light hearted admiration of some things. He gives most nations a fair shake and just plain calls out the others.
