The greatest of all the travel narratives.,
By Joannes Capillatus (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Travels in Arabia Deserta by Charles M. Doughty, with a new preface by the author, and all original maps, plans and cuts (2 vol) (Hardcover)
Truly one of the unique books of the world. Written by a man with a complete British Imperial education - in botany, geology, history, religion, literature and languages - it details two years of his traveling in Arabia, in towns and with the bedouins. He traveled openly as a Christian as well, which means that (unlike the narratives of Burckhardt or Burton, for instance) the book is a fascinating glimpse at what 19th-century Arabians thought of Christians. The style is unbelievably dense and is filled with English words you will find noplace else. But for those in the know, one of the ten or so greatest books of all time, filled with extraordinary wisdom and depth. There are abridgements about, but nothing will replace the original.
