4.0 out of 5 stars Short and good, August 28, 2011
Author: Karl Philipp Moritz
Title: Reisen eines Deutschen in England im Jahre 1782
[Title:] [Journeys of a German in England in 1782]
Time: 1782
Destination:
England
Length: about 2 months
Type: mostly walking
Rating: 8/10
Short and good.

The story: KPM follows his most fervent wish" and embarks on a two month journey around England - mostly on foot. He spends quite a bit of time in London, then visits Richmond, Windsor, Oxford, Castleton and Northhampton.

This little book is a very pleasant read. Both KPM's language and his way of thinking seem surprisingly modern, especially when he is talking about what he sees on the road. He walks from one settlement to the other, stays in little inns, goes for a swim in the Thames, visits a cave, and makes it feel like we are there with him, in the sunny countryside of England, in the year 1782.

I have one critical remark though: the text, though short as it is, gets a bit too wordy when KPM is talking about London, and especially about the Parliament. I would have liked more stuff from the road instead.

Nevertheless, this on is a gem, and I highly recommend reading it.

A clear 8 out of 10.

You take one slice after the other and hold it to the fire on a fork till the butter is melted, so that it penetrates a number of slices at once: this is called toast. "e;

This is a press in which, by means of very strong iron springs, a written paper may be printed on another blank paper, and you thus save yourself the trouble of copying; and at the same time multiply your own handwriting. "e;

I have also often met people who as they passed me obligingly and kindly asked: How do you do? To which unexpected question from total strangers I have now learned to answer, Pretty well, I thank you; how do you do? This manner of address must needs appear very singular to a foreigner, who is all at once asked by a person whom he has never seen before how he does. "e;
