George Bishop (Author)

Available from these sellers.

Book Description

August 1996
Pere Armand David became known for his remarkable scientific reports and discoveries of birds, mammals and plants in China during the latter half of the 19th century. Best-known for his discovery of Pere David's deer and the giant panda, Pere David was also an intrepid traveller, and made three major trips between 1862 and 1874 through Imperial China, Inner Mongolia and Tibet, faithfully recording his findings and adventures. The book is illustrated with period engravings and photographs, with a colour section of some of the species first discovered by Pere David.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

For those readers unfamiliar with the person who brought the giant panda to the world's attention, Bishop's spirited retelling of the Basque priest's intrepid journeys certainly provides enlightenment. Missionary, formidable explorer, and outstanding naturalist, Pere Armand David was a fearless traveler at a time when remote places were fraught with constant danger and the threat of illness. During the late nineteenth century, David wandered through regions of Tibet, China, and Mongolia, and thankfully he logged the details of his treks in diaries. Bishop consulted those journals as well as additional resources to fabricate a reconstruction of David's thrilling adventures. Illustrations include numerous archival images and a color portfolio showing flora and fauna discovered by David. Alice Joyce
