Book Description

October 1, 2000
"This book is the product of close to half a century of my life. During all that time I have lived as an American in Mexico, the country that seized my heart and held me, no ransom possible. I have been privileged to travel and observe and write about its people, its geography, its art, its history. From Mexico City I have journeyed often to Maya country--roughly all of southeastern Mexico, the entirety of Belize and Guatemala, and westernmost Honduras and El Salvador. I was searching for those "lost" cities in the jungle that in fact had never been lost at all, except from the foreigner's point of view."

About the Author

Carol Miller is an independent investigator devoted to the Maya for close to fifty years. Not only a tireless student and traveler, she is also a translator, photographer, gastronomer, and prominent sculptor whose bronze figures are celebrated in Mexico and beyond. She is a member of the Society for American Archaeology and the Institute for Maya Studies. Her work as a journalist included three years as the LIFE correspondent in Mexico (1962–64). As a travel writer she wrote for both the Mexico City News and the Mexico City Times, as well as newspaper travel sections and magazines devoted to travel in Mexico, the United States, Canada, and Europe. Born in Los Angeles, she has lived in Mexico since 1952, is married, and has two children. She is the author of several books about her travels in the Maya country and, with Guadalupe Rivera Marín, of The Winged Prophet: From Hermes to Quetzalcoatl, a book on comparative mythology and cultural convergence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book, April 13, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Travels in the Maya World (Paperback)
This is a fantastic book, really well written. It is also fun, funny and unusual. It sees things most people don't see. It notices and it describes and it informs. I loved it and am planning to give it to friends as a gift.
