Not a bad story. Another attempt to recount Holmes' adventures during the period that Sherlockians refer to as "The Great Hiatus", when the world thought the great detective dead and he was supposedly fleeing what was left of Professor Moriarty's gang. I've read several accounts of this, but I confess that so far this is my favorite. The reader will find useful a careful reading of the original Holmes stories, "The Final Problem" and "The Adventure of the Empty House" to appreciate some of the nuances and decisions made by the writer. The tale seems well researched, even including an explanation of the Sunni and the Shi'ia Muslim sects, as well as the complex political situation of Tibet, as it stood in the late 19th century, all of which has interesting echoes in the politics of today. With all that, it is a fun adventure story, with only a couple of moments (among them, Holmes' second confrontation with Moriarty) which seem false or contrived. Excellent for the serious Holmes fan. This is the first of a series of Holmes pastiches by John Hall, most of them (even more traditionally) set in England, which I intend to try after reading this book.
