Gr 4-7--This series offers a unique approach to help children understand why people leave their own countries to seek out better, safer homes. The books explain the dangers faced by refugees; describe their daily struggles in the temporary camps; and then introduce one family that is adjusting to life in America while still preserving their own traditions. A Sudanese Family relates the journey of nine-year-old Dei Jock Dei and his family, who left Sudan in June, 1994, to escape civil war. They walked to camps in nearby Ethiopia and Kenya, and eventually were sponsored by a church group in Atlanta. Archibald also offers interesting background information on Sudan. In Bosnian Family, Velma Dusper, her brother, and their parents were almost starving when they decided to flee war-torn Bosnia in the spring of 1994. The father had to walk over the mountains to avoid being arrested for not serving in the army, while the rest of the family traveled by bus to a refugee camp in Croatia. Conditions there were primitive at best, and the family escaped with nothing. After five months, a sponsor was found and the family emigrated to Grand Forks, ND. Details on the history of the Balkans and the fighting between different ethnic groups are also provided. Both books include pronunciation guides and a folktale. The full-color photographs greatly enhance the texts, showing pictures of the peoples' homelands and the families adjusting to life in their new country.
