It's a miracle of engineering, being one of the smallest quadcopters made and yet having very advanced features. Notice that it lack gears - this is a direct drive machine! It also features a 6-axis stabilization system, as opposed to the 3 or 4 axis on most lower cost quads - this results in an amazingly stable craft - even in wind!
However, you may notice that some reviewers love it and some hate it.

Appeal to users:
Advanced Beginners UP.

Type of Quad: Consumer Micro

In most cases, this should not be your first Quad or your first radio controlled flying machine! It is not for complete beginners, more for advanced beginners all the way up to expert.
Flyers with no experience are likely to crash the QR-1 too many times before they get the hang of it, resulting in a poor experience and a broken quadcopter. How do I know this? Easy - I did it myself.
BUT, once I took more time to learn on the cheaper Syma X1 and read up on the QR-1 and it's brother, the Hubsan X4, I then had the confidence to start using the quad in the way it was intended.

In summary, if this is your first quadcopter it may be your last. But if you are a hobbyist and don't mind working on your machines, you may love this thing no matter what level of flyer you are!

I made some videos of the Hubsan X4 (the equiv. model by the same OEM) at Droneflyers.com

Note that quad beginners would do well to fly both simulators (available for PC or iphone or Android) and or less expensive and more durable models first - one of my starter suggestions is the Syma X1 4 Channel 2.4G RC Quad Copter - UFO

Or the WLtoys V929 Beetle 4-Axis Quadcopter Dexterous Mini UFO RTF

Background:
At the time of its introduction the Hubsan X4, the predecessor to the QR-1 was the smallest quadcoptor available, small enough to fit in the palm of ones hand - including its propellers, even smaller then the DIY "fun-sized" micro quad. One of its chief competitors was Walkera's Lady Bug which was also billed as a "super stable" quad suitable for beginners. However at about half the price, the Hubsan X4 represented a better price point for beginners wishing to learn to fly. In addition the quad requires no additional purchases of receivers, or transmitters. It is completely ready to fly. One only has to add three AAA batteries to the transmitter. RCGroups.com has a dedicated thread to the X4 which includes reviews, tips and tricks, and the manual. This micro quad was often backordered on sites like Banggood.com and shipping and procurement times were long as it was only available in China. Requests were made to Amazon to carry the item within the U.S.. After approximately five months Traxxas announced that they would be rebranding the micro quad and thus increasing its availability for U.S. purchase. However to do so required a significant price increase. Amazon currently sells the Hubsan X4 for $59 and the Traxxas version for $89.

Experience:
The Hubsan X4 / Traxxas Qr-1 is an excellent beginner quad. It is small enough to fly in a living room or bedroom. It is light enough to be able to fall from a height of five stories and bounce off the ground or grass. Should the operator lose control of the craft, he/she need only to kill the throttle and mentally mark where it lands. Neither the quad, nor any animals, plants, furniture, or walls will be damaged. In this manner one can practice repeatedly without fear of significantly damaging the quad or its surroundings.

This is an huge step up from the two rotor 3 channel helicopters. It includes a nice LCD remote, two batteries, a USB charger, a small screwdriver and a full set of extra blades.
Being four channels this will take longer to master but once you do you'll be rewarded with full acrobatics like flips, loops and rolls. After you get comfortable with your skills you can switch to 'expert' mode making the response time much, much faster.
The wires and connectors are high quality, larger gauge and silicone insulated. The USB charger can be plugged in to your computer, car phone charger or an iPhone charger.

Pros- build quality, spare parts, warranty, fun factor.
Cons- I took off one star because I've yet to see "hands-free hover". There always seems to be some drift, that's it.

This is a rebranded hubs an x4 that can be bought for $40. They have newer versions of this quad for less money. This is an out dated model.
I bought the Traxxas because it was local but the hubsan is way cheaper. The parts are all identical.
Look into the upgraded x4. You can get them with a better board and camera for this price.

This is our first Quad copter and the kids love it. They are very experienced RC Heli owners and easily and quickly learned how to fly this one around. It is not as easy as a heli but you will figure it out quickly. It was a bit smaller than I thought it was going to be but it has plenty of power and agility. At just UNDER 6 inches across, it easily flies indoors. Out of the box it took a few attempts to get the control and the quad paired but then it was set. Also, be sure to trim it up (roll, yaw, thrust etc) before you give it to your kids. It should auto level automatically and hover without any RIGHT stick input. This only took me 3-4 attempts and 2 minutes and it was ready for the kids. Sometimes out of the box toys are not trimmed perfectly and lead to frustration. So far it has taken a few beatings but keeps on ticking. I paid $70+tax and feel like it was worth it. Hope this helps!
