Everything about the Spartan means business!

From the Manufacturer

It's the kind of boat you would expect from Traxxas: Extreme Velineon brushless power, ballistic speed, and a huge waterfall of roost that rains down long after the boat speeds by. The howling fury of 50+ mph across the water on optional 6S LiPo power will make even the most insatiable, power-hungry enthusiasts jump up and take notice. Simply put, Spartan is your boat. Everything about it means business: the super-rigid, 36-inch deep-V hull, smooth, cable-drive efficiency, innovative water cooling system, and precision aluminum and stainless steel drive controls. The clean, modern hull design is built up in layers for maximum rigidity where it matters most, the transom and ride pad. The integrated battery trays securely hold a variety of battery configurations—from the included 7-cell Power Cell NiMH packs to 3S LiPos. Ride trim is easily adjusted by positioning the packs fore and aft using the convenient hook and loop straps that secure the batteries. The optimized rudder configuration carves amazing full-throttle turns. A high-output 2.4GHz radio system with Traxxas Link, along with water-cooled and waterproof electronics, keep Spartan going for the trouble-free, all-day running you count on from Traxxas. No detail was overlooked on our mission to engineer a boat that offers the power, speed, convenience, and fun that Traxxas' award-winning cars and trucks are known for. Prepare yourself for the ultimate R/C boating power trip, only from Traxxas.

I was passionate about RC when I was younger but had outgrown my obsession a few years ago. I had some extra cash to burn and bought one of these from my local hobby store a few months ago. Anyone who is into the expensive RC vehicles instead of the young children's style ones you find at Target knows that the list price does not include any accessories like batteries, or fuel for you nitro heads, and things of that nature. This does. Traxxas has included pretty much everything you will need to get rolling as soon as you open the box. But, those powerful LiPo's are not included, and neither is the charger for the LiPo's.

When I was heavily into RC, nitro was my favorite. But, the somewhat recent release of these killer LiPo batteries had me salivating ... I had to see for myself. The sheer voltage they can unleash is unparalleled. More voltage = more power! If you can afford the 3S LiPo's, you will not be disappointed! However, they are hard to maintain and they are not included in the box. A charger for the LiPo's will run you roughly 75 dollars, and the top-of-the-line 3S LiPo's can run close to $120, if not more.

They are not kidding that this thing will do 50+ with 3S LiPo batteries. If you can afford the total cost, you will be satisfied.

Traxxas is known for their tough products. I also have a six year old T-MAXX that rarely breaks. I have upgraded the engine several times (the engines inherently don't last long), however I have put roughly 50 gallons of nitro through the transmission in my T-MAXX. The transmission still 100% stock and has had no upgrades or replacement parts from day one.

i purchased this boat in july of 2013. it is in fact an awesome boat. for batteries i used 2 3 cell venom 5400 mah packs with 20c discharge. the thing simply flew and turned many heads at the lake.

if you purchase this boat, i advise updating the cooling system on the motor, and also updating the rudder with a longer one that is more stable to help with the stability of the boat. also most after market rudders have dual water pickups, which allows you to cool the esc and motor independently.

anyone who is interested in this boat should definitely do some research on it. once you do your research, you will find that the "older" version of this boat has a problem with the esc catching on fire. also note that traxxas had attended to this problem and resolved the issue. or so they thought.

i went out to the lake just like every other day and dropped her in and let her fly. did a few laps (small lake) and everything was working fine. went for the third lap, and it hesitated. so i let go of the throttle. hit the throttle again and POOF! she went up in smoke out on the lake (well that's embarrassing). there was a strong breeze that day so i let her float ashore. i could smell it 30 feet out. when she finally floated ashore, i could already see the damage done. the hatch was melted, and the lip where the hatch used to fit was charred and melted. i pulled off the hatch to see a completely melted down esc, along with pretty much everything else. the Styrofoam was charred, the battery connector came apart from the esc, the electronics tray is melted, even one of the wires connecting the motor to the esc was melted off.

This is truly a good boat when cared for properly. Mine went 51 mph on glass water with trim adjusted properly.
The only thing I can Say is fast fast. Do as the book says and be obsessive about lubrication of the shaft and bearing, and this boat will rock. I don't smash mine like most people sound like they do, but after 2 yrs and 50 or so runs still goes like a top. The only reason I gave 4 stars was because if you do have a problem don't call castle (the company who makes the esc and motor), you will be treated poorly. Traxxas chose castle to outfit this boat, so they lose 1 star!
However, I was treated great by traxxas when I called them about proper maintenance questions.

I am quite disappointed with Traxxas since I bought their Spartan Deep V boat which has a good hull, hardware and RC, but came with an inferior and truly useless ESC and motor. It was advertised as RTR to take 6S and go 50mph, but it took my 6S, went 35 mph and engine blew (with smoke) after 15 min. Traxxas should pull those boats off the shelf and just sell the boat shell alone! I upgraded the boat's ESC, installed a brushless Leopard motor and Sea King 180 amp ESC, upgraded the propeller, and changed (larger diameter) and re-rerouted (more efficient pathway) the water lines as advised by several other owner blogs. Now it runs awesome! But only after investing another $500 plus dollars. I felt like the money I spent for the original ESC and motor in this package deal was a total loss.

I didn't buy my spartan from amazon, 660$ for Nimh is a TOTAL rip off. You can find Lipo powered Spartans for 520$ all day if you shop around.

However, the boat itself is a total blast, you have to have experience tuning and adjusting a boat of this nature and even more experience driving one. But once you tame it, hold on cause this thing flies. It handles choppy water really well and corners beautifully. I upgraded the cooling jacket in mine to an aluminum version and has been completely cool. I can put my finger on the motor and jacket for several seconds before it becomes uncomfortable so don't let those people talk you out of it because of heating problems from 4 years ago.
