Superb collection showing both depth and breadth of Nevilles, March 12, 2000
This review is from: Treacherous: A History Of The Neville Brothers, 1955 - 1985 (Audio CD)
An incredible collection spanning the entire recorded career of the Neville Brothers, from The Hawketts' (featuring Art Neville) first release in 1954 through live tracks recorded in the mid-80's. The range of styles is impressive, including late 50's New Orleans Rock 'n' Roll, sentimental ballads, early 70's funk, Mardi Gras band music, and more heavily produced sounds of the 80's.
The compositions include a huge number of gems from the Allen Toussaint catalogue (some credited to Toussaint, some to "Naomi Neville"), tracks from the individual Nevilles (including Aaron's jail-penned "Every Day" and Cyril's classic "Brother John"), as well as songs by Lieber/Stoller, John Hiatt and others. The big hit single with a bullet ("Tell It Like It Is") is included in an excellent live version.
The big revelation to me was hearing Aaron Neville's incredible voice singing so many different styles of music. Besides the ballads that I was already familiar with, Aaron proves himself able to handle more upbeat pieces handily.
Overall a great collection of great songs from a great band. The only thing that's probably better is to get all the original singles and LP's.
