3.0 out of 5 stars Silver Treasure
This book has some good basic insights and ideas. It is easy to understand. The book is fairly dull on the layout and presentation but for a starting place on helping individuals with Autism it has some great ideas.

This book provides great hands-on tips for dealing with autism. The case studies and examples make confusing or unusual approaches much clearer and easier to try at home or explain to others (doctors, teachers, etc.). Reading cover to cover is unnecessary, all chapters can be read independently. The authors give clear, knowledgeable solutions for dealing with such problem behaviors as escaping, biting, and "stimming", along with lots of information on using various intervention techniques. A must-have for teachers and parents!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best resource I ever purchased, February 27, 2004

I bought this book not knowing what to expect. I just wanted something, anything to read to help my autistic child. This book is packed with stratagies, keys, cautions and important information. It has a table of contents and you can read what you need. It has a special problem area in which it speaks about eating habits, smearing poo, and various other situations that we may encounter. I use this book daily. I bring it to IEP meetings and just recently after reading about sensory integration and calling the OT and requesting information about products to help with sensory integration, she sent me a packet of information, a few products to try at home to see if they help before I go and spend money on things and a thank you note that said "thanks for all you do". I had never been thanked by a teacher. This book helped me realize that my childs autism will not go away and that there are things that can help him and that I have the power to help him. It also helped open up communication and resources from the school as well and has gotten me respect as well. I am thankful to this book and will keep it on my desk. It is the only book I keep out about autism. Because it is the most useful.
It is well worth the money!

5.0 out of 5 stars If behavior is an issue, this book is for you!, July 5, 2006
This review is from: A Treasure Chest of Behavioral Strategies for Individuals with Autism (Paperback)
This book was so helpful in understanding behavioral issues better. As a teacher at a main stream elementary school, I encounter children with milder forms of Autism on a daily basis. I just have thought in the past that their disobedience was blatant. However, through the reading of this book, I have learned that bad behavior many times is a result of their communication and sensory issues. Something as simple as communicating to them in a way that is simple for them to understand and not speaking to them figuratively or giving many commands at once, can avoid an episode of bad behavior. If I can make sure that whatever activities we do are mapped out for the day and that "surprises" on a regular basis do not occur, then we can avoid unnecessary trauma or stress. There are so many useful tips offered that have been tried and proven. If you or someone you know, work with an individual with autism, you definitely need to read this book. It truly is an indispensable source.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for any teacher, June 30, 2006
This review is from: A Treasure Chest of Behavioral Strategies for Individuals with Autism (Paperback)
I'm glad that I got my hands on this book! It is very comprehensive. The chapters on "Impact of Autism Characteristics" and "Increasing Desired Behaviors", were especially helpful. It really expounded on alot of much needed information that I need as a teacher. I have a boy in my class that has autism disorder and this book really gave me tools that I need to better meet his needs and be a better teacher. I can deal more effectively with him now in the problems that we sometimes encounter in the classroom. Thank you!

My four year old son with autism has a very difficult time regulating his emotions, following directions and transitioning. This book was essential when he was showing aggression and not being able to calm down when he did not want to take direction. I highly recommend this book and Just Take a Bite to anyone battling this issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this one!, June 26, 2006
This review is from: A Treasure Chest of Behavioral Strategies for Individuals with Autism (Paperback)
A world of great information is shared in this book! Discipline, reinforcement, increasing desired behavior, sensory issues and stress management are just some of the topics that are covered. Sometimes discipline can be very tricky. The variety of behavior strategies definitely give an wide range of methods to deal with the individual. Negative consequences as opposed to punishment is emphasized. It offers some really good information on why physiological needs may impact behavior. It is a great comprehensive source for anyone that may work with individuals with Autism.

I recommend this book to parents and teachers alike - it is simply written, the methods are effective, and the techniques are grounded in ABA. As a BCBA, this is the book I share with parents and school systems. No one here will try to impress you with technical terms you don't understand; on the contrary, this book will give you tools, and simple explanations of why those tools work. In a nutshell, this book will be in your hands more than on the bookshelf, and you'll feel like you've finally found a resource you can actually use.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST Autism Book I've ever read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, November 20, 2009

This review is from: A Treasure Chest of Behavioral Strategies for Individuals with Autism (Paperback)
2 chapters in and I'm thoroughly impressed. First of all, the book is much larger than I expected; the size reminds me of a textbook. Second, the book is written in laments terms, which is rare for an Autism-related book. It's easy to follow and understand; I can already tell it's going to be an invaluable source for years to come.. It gives so many different strategies and suggestions that it's virtually guarenteed to give you something that will work for your child/student! Last, I think this is a MUST HAVE for all parents of Autistic children because it is not only talks about behavior but about how your child thinks.
