The best sign language video for babies and toddlers!,
By Chilling Out "Love Music" (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Treasure Chest Toys and Signs (DVD)
I have purchased many sign language videos for babies and toddlers and this one is easily the best one out there for babies 6-36 mths. old. For older children 18-24 mths. + I would recommend the Signing Time series.
This is set up in a Baby Einstein-type style where it shows engaging visuals as well as a bear and children producing the signs. Unlike the Baby Signs videos it uses all ASL signs which has a lot of benefits. It includes over 35 ASL signs as well, unlike the Baby Signs videos that only include 6-10 "signs" per DVD. This DVD has kept my son as well as my daycare children totally engaged. By 2 years old my son and two of my daycare children who were also 2 yrs. old would sign every sign along with the DVD. Young babies and toddlers alike seem to love this video and many ask for it by signing BEAR. Another great thing about this DVD is that there is an info piece at the end where Dr. Anthony gives you tips and information about how to introduce the signs to your baby throughout the day as well. The only criticism I have of this DVD is it is obviously an amateur production as far as it is not as polished looking as the Baby Einstein series. You can easily tell they did not have a huge production budget. That being said it is upbeat and fun and although as an adult you might groan at the cheesy looking bear, the kids absolutely LOVE this video and it is the best one I've seen yet out there for babies and toddlers. I definitely recommend you get the DVD and not the VHS because this is likely to become a favourite in your home and if you get the VHS it will probably wear out very quickly!

AWESOME!,

AWESOME!!! When I started to sign with my son I purchased this video along with MANY other childrens signing videos. Of all the videos this is the ONLY one which captured his attention AND reinforced the signs we were learning. My son loved the signing bear and the music which plays throughout the video. This video is set up very much like the Baby Einstein series videos. The only difference is that signs are introduced. My son, now 3 years old, will still request to watch the video (even though he knows all of the signs in the video). If you are going to invest your money in a signing video this is most certainly the video to buy.

Excellent sign language video!,

My 10-month-old son loves this video. Unlike so many other babies, he did not enjoy Baby Einstein at all, and would cry after a few minutes of it. But he sits and watches this video very intently. He really likes the bear and all the kids. The parent segment at the end, which explains how to begin signing with your baby, is very helpful. I would definitely recommend this video to all parents.

Great First Signing Video,

This was my first signing video I purchased for my daughter. I purchased it at a baby sign language seminar. My daughter never watches tv, but when I purchased this video I was hoping it would grab her attention so she would begin learing new signs. I am happy to say that she did indeed enjoy this video, as did I and her father. We all learned signs in the video together. I would recommend this video as a start to learing baby sings.

Awesome Tool!,

This was so easy for us (parents) and simple enough for our 10 month old to learn 3 signs in the first viewing! This video has helped us to communicate with our daughter and there was nothing to it. She is now 2 years old and still loves to watch this video. This video is a must have for every family.

"Interpreter approved!",

As a sign language interpreter, I especially like how these developers respect American Sign Language (ASL) and ONLY use ASL in this video (and in all their products). Beware, there are other products out there that use MADE UP SIGNS! The National Association of the Deaf approves of and supports the Signing Smart Program - that says a lot.
My daughter, who didn't like Einstein videos, loves this video. She learned to sign "HAT" from this video. We enjoyed our Signing Smart class so much I decided to become an instructor. Isabella is now 19 months old and has over 150 signs and over 75 words!

Fabulous!,

This video was a gave my son (now almost 2) a great start to signing when he was only 8 months old! His language has developed incredibly fast, with very little frustration and I attribute this to his ability to communicate his needs early on. The Treasure Chest is engaging and keeps little ones' attention, but isn't so fast paced that it loses them. There is a lot of reinforcement of the signs used and a wonderful section at the end for parents which shows them how they can sign with their child(ren).I LOVE this video!

Ok, but the big stuffed bear is awful!,
By
This review is from: The Treasure Chest Toys and Signs (DVD)
I've seen several children's signing videos, and this one is on the low end in terms of production quality. The big stuffed bear with human hands scares my 2-1/2 yr. old autistic son to hysterical tears. When the children are on screen, he calms down and begins to enjoy the show. But as soon as the bear appears, he freaks. From an adult's point of view, I had a very hard time learning the proper ASL motions from this video. It's great to see children demonstrating the signs, but they should have used a human adult (the one sitting behind the bear obviously couldn't see what her hands were doing). I really regret the full-priced investment in this dvd!

Best Video We've Found,
This review is from: The Treasure Chest Toys and Signs [VHS] (VHS Tape)
We have reviewed many of the Sign Language Videos out there for hearing infants/toddlers, and this one is by far the best. The other ones bored by daughter and she didn't watch them for more than 2-3 minutes. She's watched this one so many times, she's got it memorized. She calls it "Bear Video" (in sign language) and requests it often!

I got this video when my eldest daughter was learning signs. She loved it! A few times as we were getting in the car, I'd see her doing a sign, but didn't know what she was saying (it wasn't a sign I'd been teaching her). Then one day a friend was with me and said, "Look, she's signing KEYS!" She was! She completely learned that sign (and many others) from that video. Now my second daughter (8 months old) watches that video and loves it. She already has four signs, all learned through the Wide-Eyed Learning method. It's wonderful. As to the video, it reminds me of the Baby Einstein videos. There are lots of different toys used, plus actual objects, for each sign. At the end of the video, the creator gives a lesson on how to teach sign language to your infant. I highly recommend this video! |
