Great Example of New Zealand Fiction,

Elizabeth Knox is regarded as a pre-eminent novelist in a nation of readers. Reading in New Zealand isn't limited to upwardly mobile urbanites. Half of the country's population is rural and farm linked - and except during calving and lambing season, everyone reads.
Knox's easy going style and vivid characterization remind me of intuitive American writers like Carson McCullers and Barbara Kingsolver. The plot of TREASURE concerns a group of American fundamentalists who come to New Zealand to save souls. A complicated relationship between the two brothers who lead the Christian flock causes the younger one to question both his faith and his older brother's sincereity. At the same time the agnostic New Zealanders who cross their path find reason to question the direction of their own lives. The ending is very unexpected.
