Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

First published by a small press specializing in books on spirituality, Bordhi's young adult novel won the Nautilus Award at the 2004 BEA, but this relaunch is unlikely to win over older fantasy readers. The late Grandma Daphne's will requests that daughter Lily bring her family—husband, Peter; 13-year-old daughter, Sara; and 12-year-old son, Ben—to live in Daphne's forest house for a year. The children, sounding much younger than their given ages, immediately break all the rules set by their irrational, controlling mother. Ben almost dies at the hands of Daggett, Daphne's ex-lover turned woods-dwelling wildman, and then thanks him for the experience. Sara is whisked off by the spirit Esther to learn about inner peace, though this lesson doesn't include letting her family know where she is so they can also feel inner peace. Some may find Lily and Peter too flatly painted to take their eventual embrace of magic and wonder seriously, but all will cheer the one well-drawn character, a three-legged bloodhound named Matthias, as he leads the hunt for the missing Sara. Treasure Forest is an adventure novel intended for young adults, yet appealing to all ages. Their quest will cause them to witness the mysteries of the forest, meet a paraplegic private eye with a three-legged bloodhound, and discover a secret that will change their lives forever. Cat doesn't take us back to our childhood with Treasure Forest, she returns our childhood to us. Reading this book gives us space to pause, to connect with that deep down inside spot where everything is fresh and still, the place where we live and breath...

5.0 out of 5 stars children in search of answers, September 27, 2004

This review is from: Treasure Forest (The Forest Inside, Book 1) (Hardcover)
Rebeccasreads highly recommends TREASURE FOREST as a children's tale of sorrow & success, where Ben & Sara are compelled to seek answers to their grandmother's last letters in which she asked a question.

Filled with the dangers & delights of forest life, Ben & Sara's adventures open up a new way of living life in the here & now, with some clear & informative ideas about meditation & enlightenment.

Not preachy at all. In fact, TREASURE FOREST is a story for all ages.
