I love mystery-adventure role-play games, and this is one of the best ones that I have ever played. The graphics are beautiful (and run smoothly), the plot is solid, and the interactive environments are very engaging and interesting. The game was challenging, but not too hard where you get desperately stuck and can't proceed without a walk-through.
I loved all the different chapters and environments to explore, from the local Inn, to a coastal town, to a pirate ship, and (of course) the island! These all ran seemlessly, and I discovered no glitches or any other issues with gameplay. The only part of the game that could have been improved, in my opinion, was that there was a lot of dialogue at the end. I'm sure it goes along with the original book plot, but for me, it would have been nicer to have it abbreviated somewhat. This game is definitely not for kids. Not overly violent, but it has adult themes (dead bodies, flirting with your girlfriend, talking to prostitutes, etc). I was a bit suprised originally, because the game case arrived with no instructions for installation or gameplay, but I shortly discovered that this wasn't a problem. I just ran the installation application from the Treasure Island icon in the DVD drive. The game play commands were very simple. . . just click where you want to walk or interact, and right click on things for background info. You can also combine things in your inventory to make new objects. Overall, a great game!! I hope they come out with a sequal!!!

"Treasure Island" is more or less based on the Robert Lewis Stevenson classic. You play the part of young Jim Hawkins and, as in the book, you try to find a lost treasure by out witting treacherous pirates. It is fun to interact with Long John Silver and meet up with Old Ben Gunn, which actually adds a lot to the likability of the game. There are a lot puzzles and tasks that you need to complete of the type that experienced players of this genre of games will recognize, and mostly take the form of getting and object or completing a task to get an item that unlocks yet another task. The story does deviate significantly from the book in both characters and plot, so purists will likely be disappointed. That being said, this is a fairly good and involved game that will give a solid six to eight hours of play time. Here are my observations:
Pros- + Great Graphics; the explorable environment looks fantastic + Good Interface; easy to learn and maneuver the character + Great Story Line; despite the quests and odd tasks that Jim needs to complete, the story is very interesting and actually exciting in places Cons- - Not Very Challenging; experienced players will not be overly challenged with the game play or puzzle solving - No Replay Value; once you play this once, there really isn't any reason to play it again So, this a very basic adventure game set in a beautiful interactive environment, that is geared toward the beginner players - it is not for the more experienced players. When I first came across this title, I thought, "oh no, not ANOTHER Treasure Island." But for the low price I decided to give it a try. It really is a good adventure game, adhering to R.L. Stevenson's original story more closely than most. The media is DVD and the screen is limited to 1280x1024; what this means is that it is a far longer game with more detail than you might expect from one disk. The voice acting is excellent. The game engine is great; Treasure Island was created with the Nebula Device 3, an open source game engine, and this is a stunning example of its capabilities.
So why is the price so low? One factor is that Radon Labs, after ten years of publishing, went bankrupt and was bought out earlier this year. Business machinations often have nothing to do with the quality of the product. I recommend this game!
