Second Best Ever Version!,
By Gandalf "a reader" (U.S.A) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Treasure Island [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is not the version I know and love from childhood, however it is a great telling and shouldn't be missed. It was first released in the 50s and the Long John (Robert Newton) character and Jim Hawkins (Bobby Driscoll) are standouts, and between the two leads there is real comradarie! I actually read the Robert Lewis Stevenson book when I was 8 years old (I was reading on a junior high level). Only after that did I see the movie. It was anything but a letdown; the book seemed to come to life! I honestly do suggest reading the classic first and letting your imagination people the story first. All in all this is a wonderful movie, and well acted in this version. It is not as accurate to the book, but it's enough to make you want to go find some treasure of your own. In fact you may discover, as did I, the tale itself is the true treasure.

Bobby Driscoll at his best,

The first and one of the best disney Films ever made. It is alot more exciting than the Wallace Berry one I personally think. It has better actors and I highly suggest it to anyone that wants to watch an adventure movie.

Not the best, But good.,

Okay, so this isn't as imaginative as the Lionel Barrymore version, but I enjoyed Bobby Driscoll's(one of the most respected child actors) performance as Jim Hawkins. I tried to enjoy it because I love Disney Movies, but it doesn't cut at my enjoyment. I actually like it better than the book.

Stick with the 1934 version!,

This review is from: Treasure Island [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Disney version of the Stevenson pirate yarn. Not as faithful to the novel as the 1934 version, with baffling changes made throughout, including the ending.Thought Wallace Beery made a much better Long John Silver than some actor named Newton.Seemed like another Disney whitewash job.The only plus is that this version is in color. The story of the search for buried treasure, Bobby Driscoll plays a passable Jim Hawkins. For those wishing a faithful version of the Stevenson story, however, stick with Wallace Beery, Lionel Barrymore, and Jackie Cooper!
