5.0 out of 5 stars FINALLY~~~~ An explanation that makes sense!, June 7, 2004
This review is from: The Treasure of Montsegur: Study of the Cathar Heresy and the Nature of the Cathar Secret (Paperback)
Long being a student of Cathar belief and spiritual practice, I find this to be by far the best example of a definition of who the Cathars were and what they believed.

Birks does an excellent job at separating the myth from the facts in the beginning of the book - detailing how the treasure hunters and would-be esotericists and occult practioners of the early 20th century sought to turn the Cathars into something mystic and other-wordly - and it seems these ne'er-do-wells would have sought to exploit the Cathars. They would not have had a treasure - they would not have cared - it was $$$$ and they did not care for the things of this world.

In the second half of the book, he details what makes total sense of their beliefs - about spirituality, the Holy Spirit, the role of Jesus as well as their place in the world. This book spoke to me and made more sense than any other work on Cathars ever written. I am grateful that this book was published - and Birks nails it succintly and precisely - without the romance and esoteric mumbo jumbo for which they have become famous - THEY WERE DUALISTS. Period.
