This issue on Naxos is a reissue of an out-of-print 2001 Marco Polo release which can still be found online but generally at inflated prices. It features almost the complete score of Max Steiner's music for the classic combination film noir and Western, 'The Treasure of the Sierra Madre', surely one of the finest American films, certainly one of the finest films directed by John Huston. It won him two Oscars. His father, Walter Huston, also won an Oscar for best supporting actor. And who can forget Humphrey Bogart's increasingly paranoid 'Dobbs' in B. Craven's story of lust for gold and its effect on the mental balance of those greedy souls who go after it? The score, as I say, is almost complete and certainly much more complete than previous recordings of 'suites' from the score. The only things missing are a few brief repetitious cues. At the end of the CD are three extra cues -- for the theatrical trailer, the alternate main title and the alternate finale.

Max Steiner's film music is a known quantity, sometimes now thought to be a bit old-fashioned in its use of luxurious orchestral textures utilizing a style he learned in his native Vienna. And there are those who feel that this score is a bit over the top. But anyone who has seen the film and paid particular attention to the use it makes of Steiner's score will agree that it is extraordinarily effective. Some argue that the 'Mexican' music actually sounds Spanish, and that is probably true (although I find that the 'Texas memories' cue does in fact sound at times more Mexican than Texan!). Still, this is vintage Steiner and worth preserving.

The score has been reconstructed by the redoubtable John Morgan, the noted film music expert.

Every day in every way, they're getting better and better. The budget-priced Naxos label is reissuing many of Marco Polo's full-priced recordings, including many of film scores. The Marco Polo discs were worth the money, and now the Naxos reissues make things even easier on the buyer. For those of you, like me, who love old movies, the reconstructed scores have been godsends; but with the restoration of Max Steiner's music for the 1948 John Huston classic, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Naxos/Marco Polo have outdone themselves. This may be the best movie music recorded in the past few decades, it's that good, and it's an album I have fallen in love with.

Listening to Steiner's score, restored by John Morgan, the man responsible for many other Naxos-Marco Polo efforts, one can picture every detail of the story line and hear it in some of the best sound ever heard in this music (from the seemingly unlikely source of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and Chorus). I delighted in every minute of it.

Being critical and possessing keen hearing and listening to the "authenticity" of motion picture soundtracks, I have to say that this version by William Stromberg and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra is absolutly outstanding. Even though it contains only 22 tracks vice the "original" by Max Steiner's original with 29 tracks; nevertheless, Stromberg's version is in a class by itself. Steiner's version was not stereo and is not as pronounced as Stromberg's version. It is truly a magnificent "piece of work" and really brings out the true quality of Steiner's original composition. One track,; in this case, "El Desayuno" was not on Steiner's orginal but is on Stromberg's version. It is exactly like the one in the movie! The Moscow Symphony Orchestra is, in my opinion, on the same level as Nic Raine's Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Both have created extraordinary soundtrack music that is quite impressive. One of Steiner's creations that I would like to see Stromberg recreate is "The Searcher's" with John Wayne. Steiner is without a doubt, the greatest composer of movie music for all time. There are many soundtracks that have yet to be "discovered"; The Sons of Katie Elder(E. Bernstein), Rio Bravo(Tiomkin), just to name a couple. In summation, Stromberg uses more base as Steiner did while Raine tends to create a little less in base. Of course, the size of each orchestra as well as where each is recorded is also a determining factor on the final versions. The Moscow Symphony is larger and their recording studio is also much larger. That can make the difference. In some cases, many of the "original" soundtracks are either lost, damaged or missing some of the cues that was created by the composer; hence, the listener can sense the "gap" or the missing cue or cues!Read more ›

It is unlikely that Steiner's score is going to receive a better recording any time soon. Fortunately this one is outstanding. Note for trivia fans: the cover of the 2007 issue features the Chisos Mountains in the Big Bend National Park, Texas. Certainly not the Sierra Madre.
