Merciless sophomore album, almost great,

but closer to only ok/good, not that it's bad, just their least impactful, and the one that never totally had me addicted. i have the remix version and it sounds about like every other deathmetal album from Sunlight Studio's production team; Flesh peeling guitars, soul shredding vocal assaults and in general a visceral vicious sound. Less thrashy than the debut, less melodic than the followup, their most "pure deathmetal" release and maybe that's the ultimate downfall since Merciless were more comfortable with being thrashy rather than doing the deathmetal style. Again, not bad, but the band is/was their best playing more thashy material rather than the ol'EntombeD style on here. It's basic-if you like EntombeD, DismembeR, Grave, Liers in Wait-hell ANY band from Sweden from the glory days of the late 80's/early 90's go for it! The other Merciless albums have better arrangments/mood but this is still one of those albums i couldnt live without!

the '90's Reign in Blood,

No offence to the previous reviewer, but I totally disagree with him. This album is their best work. The Awakening in '89 was more in a plodding Death style similar to Entombed or Unleased, but after that on this release in '91 they went for a more streamlined thrash approach. At the time they were going against the prevailing style. I would say they were the first retro-thrash band out there. Similarly Exhorder were also retro-thrash way before it was trendy. Definitely one of the best thrash albums of the '90's.
